GA pilots help NASA scientists protect Lake Erie from harmful algae
Pilot Terry Schubert is engaging general aviation pilots to help NASA's Rafat Ansari protect Lake Erie's coastline and interior waterways from harmful algae. Pilots fly along the edge of the lake with GPS-enabled cameras placed on the wings of their airplane; the photos are uploaded to a Cleveland State University website.

Textron could end Citation Mustang production due to low demand
The Cessna Citation Mustang business jet was unveiled in 2002 at the National Business Aviation Association's annual convention and received 170 orders on the first day. Deliveries peaked in 2009, but have steadily fallen since, spurring the possibility of an end to production.

Lake Central Air Services, a modest aerospace firm based at Muskoka Airport in Gravenhurst, Ontario, has worked with NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and others modifying and installing cutting-edge science equipment. "We have modified the aircraft to do a wide range of scientific investigation in the polar regions," said Jim Hodgson.

Super Cub pilots to land at Wis. airport for fly-in ahead of AirVenture
For the past 16 years, dozens of Super Cub pilots have attended the annual fly-in at New Holstein Municipal Airport in Wisconsin, just ahead of the Experimental Aircraft Association's AirVenture event. Pilot says flying Helldiver is "very enjoyable"
Edward Vesely earned his pilot's license at 16 and soon after began flying World War II-era aircraft. He's currently one of only two pilots qualified to fly the Curtiss SB2-C Helldiver, which he says is "a very enjoyable airplane to fly."

FAA unveils new standards for reporting runway conditions
The Federal Aviation Administration hopes the new Takeoff and Landing Performance Assessment standards will help reduce the risk of runway accidents at US airports. The standards will go into effect Oct. 1 for all members of the aviation community including general aviation pilots and air traffic controllers.

Tenn. university considers partnership with new Chinese aviation college
Middle Tennessee State University officials are in negotiations with the soon-to-open Jiangsu Aviation Technical College in China about a possible partnership to develop air traffic control and aircraft maintenance programs. "It speaks to the international reputation of our aerospace department to be asked to be one of the first partners of this new college," said MTSU President Sidney McPhee.
