So, as a starting point, the QAC spring WAS poorly constructed?

(I actually have an idea about making a tailspring in my own shop --
central structure longitudinal glass with bias plys wrapped in each
direction -- the trick is the jig to hold everything, and how to vacuum bag
the structure while still on the jig.)
