Re: Fuel tank failure after one week of testing!!! 😤
Troy, I used Safety Poxy for my tanks. No leaks after 23 years. I just wetted out all the surfaces that came in contact with fuel. Then sanded the epoxy and re-coated for any pin holes. Lightly sanded epoxy again and put on a 3rd coat with no sanding.
I believe EZ poxy was the replacement for Safety Poxy but I don’t know it’s reaction to fuel. Soak a piece of fiberglass and the same foam you use for tanks for a couple weeks and
you will know.
It’s a bummer, but many of have been there, done that. Good luck with the repair.Â

Chris,
I wonder if the slight formula change by Aeropoxy made any difference, but this was years ago now. I think my best data point is the fact that the tech rep from PTM&W said no to all fuels. He said you can splash it with gas but definitely not leave it submerged. From my pics it is easy to see the yellowing and discoloration after just a short time. Also, now that I am taking this apart, the sump screen that I had attached with flox, wet, just popped right off with very little effort. Now if I had properly wetted out the fuselage shell and sealed the pinholes, I probably wouldn’t have learned all this. It might have taken years, who knows. But I will say with what I know now, everything that used AeroPoxy and has touched fuel is getting replaced on my plane. All rework will be done with EZ poxy. The Cozy guys have a few articles on building fuel tanks. Having said all that, it doesn't help you, but, one thing I can think of is sometimes with Aeropxy if it doesn't get hot enough it stays sticky and won't cure well. I often bump up the temps with a blanket and hair dryer to set it off. > > Just a thought. Let us know what you find out. --------------- Chris------------ 36 hrs > > > -- > This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. > www.avast.com > > > > > |
