Jeeez,
I've just been called a "wanker" and a "jerk" after years of lurking and occasionally contributing to the Quickie cause. Since Masal and Finley are also in this group, I feel pretty good. Especially when I get one of the much sought after "wire-brushings" from Masal. Damian, you should feel blessed.

Re: Useful Info request for help

Jon Finley <jon@...>

Thanks for asking Damian.

It is working very well, I'm the one that isn't (been a very busy
summer/fall and I haven't been all that motivated, so not much flying).
The engine is very smooth and seems to have plenty of power. I have
plenty of tweaking still to do though (to get that last 100 kts or
so....).

I built it myself. No turbo. Previous to the EJ-22 I had a turbo EA-81
and decided that a carbureted turbo engine wasn't for me. With the EFI
on the EJ-22 I might try a turbo again someday - I want to enjoy it as
is for a while. Definitely a very economical alternative but does
require some sweat (ok, lots of it) in place of cash (unless you buy a
firewall forward setup in which case you just need the cash).

There are a couple of video's on my site from last summer if you want to
hear it run - http://www.finleyweb.net/default.asp?id=152

No, I don't have any cockpit heat at this time. I do plan to add it one
of these days though. I will probably pull hot air off the radiator
since it is in the tail.

Yea, I am a big believer in Subaru engines (for both cars and airplanes)
and everything that a modern engine offers. I wouldn't mind one of
those race ready WRX's!! :-)

Jon, How is that Ej22 working for you? Who built it? Is it Turbocharged?
That looks like it would make an excellent modern aircraft engine. Did
you use a heater core for cabin heat? We raced a turbo WRX what a fun

Hi Leon. You won't need an amplifier, but you will
need a couple of small antennas. I've done a six mile
stretch with two dishes and 802.11b, although I did
eventually install amplifiers to compensate for rain
and snow. In your case, you could use something
smaller. Feel free to email me if you'd like some
help, some suppliers and a list of what you'll need.

Peter Harris <peterjfharris@...>

Thanks for the boost Sam. Actually this is the same Damian who emailed me after given prices a week ago and asked me for the formula and design details which I sent him in good faith to satisfy his potential order.
Looks like he has changed his mind about my price now he has the formula.Maybe he is planning to go into business too.
Devaluation of the USD has had a big effect on the Oz price seen up there as listed kit pricing I saw was originally USD750 which was then AUD 1500. Now my AUD 1400 is closer to USD1000.
My spars are made by a professional sparmaker supplier to the International market and priced by him into that market at a similar cost to the original Q kit spars were before devaluation.
That includes a small amt. I am recovering with each order to cover the cost to make and maintain my mandrel.

Gentlemen, it is my humble opinion that at the end of the day... It is all
about how I work with my fellows.
Composites have come a long way.On one's own though there is a tough
learning curve.I know personally this fact. That is why I elected to pay and
go to college at the young age of 49 and here I am at a younger age of 55
with confidence in my ability with composites. I share my knowledge with
those that ask for help.
The concept of the factory could work if we all pulled together and were
able to utilize current materials and processes that are readily available.
My local EAA Chapter 96 has a great facility and is crammed with all kinds
of projects. They look at my Q with distrust and disdain though because of
its dubious reputation. I aim to fix that.
It is stupid that we cannot get together and come up with an affordable spar
that is readily available to build an LS1. Leon has worked out an easy build
solution and I have discussed it with him and it should work. I Can't wait
to hear the results of his stress test!
The ground handling issues IMHO can be easily resolved and conformed into
plans update.
Powerplants are another issue. I will not go into that.
I thank all that have come forward at this time with their valuable
information and resources and look forward to posting positive updates on
the progress of the rebuilding of N8427.

Re: Quickie stall speed

haiqu

Hi David,

On the other hand, Quickies have been known to be allowed onto the
RAA/AUF register so it is possible. I can also refer you to a website
which claims a stall of 50 mph for it. This does depend a lot on the
specifics of a particular aircraft, and the manufacturer's rating is
only used as a starting point. If the stall can be justified by
calculation or practical tests to be below 45 knots (51mph) then it's
officially a recreational aircraft.

I've been in contact with John ten Have (who lives in Australia now,
btw) and he has been extremely helpful. Considering he's the owner of
one of only three Quickies known to be flying in Australia this is a
good thing. :-)

The Onan weighs 84 pounds. A half-VW at 87 pounds is a very good
replacement. I'm also looking at some other alternatives, like the
40hp DAF and the Subaru Sherpa engines.

Quickie statistics, again

Hi,

Just checked the New Zealand register. There are two Quickies, two
Q2's and one Q200 registered. Once of the Quickies is registered as an
ultralight.

The one I just bought hasn't been registered for years, and there are
probably others in a similar situation. i.e. half-built or decommisioned.

Every school I have ever been too has a lesson plan and text books. There was talk at one time of reprinting the QAC manuals with updates and proven mods would be great.N8427 came with partial info and text. Nice workmanship throughout I wonder what dear Frank did with the construction manual?
Anyone out there care to sell me a copy for a Q200? How about a 0200 engine cowl?

Less flaming and more help for those asking questions. Fixing my plane is
taking far longer than it should because of the minimal information available.

How about direct contact ?
That is a great idea, but who and how. There are other owners here at
Chino, but I have been unable to meet them to ask questions. A good example
is my rudder. I have ended up cutting out the bottom pivot because I could
not remove the rudder. There was only 1/2 inch clearance below the pivot.
Additionally, the pin holding it on was too long, even if the pivot gave
the suggested 1.1 inch clearance. Without information, everything I do has
to be a destructive "experiment".

Probably

How can we help to change the picture ?
Less flaming and more help for those asking questions. Fixing my plane is taking far longer than it should because of the minimal information available.

How about direct contact ?
That is a great idea, but who and how. There are other owners here at Chino, but I have been unable to meet them to ask questions. A good example is my rudder. I have ended up cutting out the bottom pivot because I could not remove the rudder. There was only 1/2 inch clearance below the pivot. Additionally, the pin holding it on was too long, even if the pivot gave the suggested 1.1 inch clearance. Without information, everything I do has to be a destructive "experiment".

Damian,

Check out Peter Harris's spars. The ones I saw were far superior to the originals in terms of strength and build quality. I had the benefit of being able to do a direct comparison, first hand.
