Q2 vs Q200

I am sure this has been answered before, but other than the engine
R-2100 vs. O200 what is the difference between the Q2 and the Q200? Is
there more of an advantage of one over the other?

I can't imagine being able to repair a cut in half canard! I think
you should plan on building a new canard. If you have all materials you
only need helping hands and a game plan over several days. I think Sam
Hoskins is planning some type of wing building seminar with the tandem
wing flyin in Carbondale in May. You might check with him (either
through the builder's list or his blog/website).

Re: GU vortex generator update

Rene Robertson <q2robertson@...>

Hi Jim,
I sincerely hope that Mark will share his experience, knowledge and new VG layout with the group. I for one am very interested in finding out his new layout of minimum VG's that will do the job. For the last three years I have been waiting to repaint my airplane. This in part has been due to my search for a better VG layout. Mark's layout may put my procrastination to rest. Please try to pursuade him to write and article :)

limited quantity and have the least amount of drag. I flew with him
Saturday and he reports the following;

He has taken off, flown and landed the airplane twice during heavy
rain and found the control responses very effective and now a non
issue. When I flew with him previously without VG's, in light/mediun
rain it was all he could do to keep it in the air. He stated
previously the stick pressure was so intense he worried that the
elevator tube might break loose from the foam. He did not want to go
back to LVK and land in the rain that day so we went to a "dry
airport".

He further reports the loss of 2-3 knots at top end, which is good
because he had the fastest Q on the Planet anyway!

He believes this has solved his VG issue. So,I suggested he write an
article and share it with everyone, we will see. He is
an "explosives wizard" for Livermore National Lab and kind of quiet

P.S I now have 40 hours on my new B&C starter installation and
haven't had one problem. If you are looking for a lightweight

cause it WORKS!

Re: need a way to determine canard

Paul Buckley

Hi Todd

To determine if a canard is a GU or an LS1.

The easy way.
The LS1 canard elevators have a concave undersurface....the Gu elevators are
flat underneath.

A slightly harder way.
The shearweb on the GU is flat while the LS1 has a round carbon fibre spar.
Therefore, if you look at the back of the canard in the cockpit (in front of the
tank/seat) and it has a vertical, flat, trailing edge, it is a GU.
If the back of the canard is half round you are looking at the carbon spar of an
LS1.

Just to muddy the waters!
In the unlikely event that the elevators have concave undersurfaces AND the back
of the canard, in front of the seat, is flat, then the canard is a 'Waddelow'
LS1, only to be fitted to a Tri-Q. However, as these are quite rare I wouldn't
worry about it....just be aware.

I am considering acquiring a Q2 airframe. The owner does not know
whether it is a Gu canard or a LS1. Is there an easy way for him to
determine which it is?

Q-Talk VW Type 4 Hydraulic Lifter Problem

R_Christenson <r_christenson@...>

I got my first issue of Q-Talk and enjoyed it very much. I converted
a 1972 type 4 VW engine to fit in my 67 beetle and it had hard
lifters, I ran it very hard with no problems. Hearing about the
problems with the hydraulic lifters in the Q-talk article I would
consider purchasing a new set of hard lifters. I don't remember the
year they switched to hydraulic lifter but the hard lifters should
work in all type 4 engines. My favorite quote from Burt Rutan "The
complexity you remove can never fail".

I just moved the folders into the right places and it works now. I had to move the Q and tri Q folders to the airplanes folder then the panel to panel etc and it brings it up. The 1st time trough it looks like the default plane but when I tell it to fly and go back through it all looks right.

Thanks Again,
