Spring Fling Update

Just to briefly fill everyone in on what's going on at Sam's Spring
fling.

I flew down on Friday afternoon at which time I was the third Q to
arrive.
From here I'm guessing the best as I can remember and will surly leave
someone out.

Terry Crouch and Doug Humble had already arrived and Joseph Snow
trailered his
Q down from the Cleveland area. Other arrivals were the Marstall's,
Richardson's,
Ron Trianno, and a few who I didn't know.

Sam had made arrangements to have supper at the old train depot in
Murphysboro which was
GREAT. Thanks Sam. And by the way his new wheel pants look pretty good
too. One is
an off red and the other is an off green. CUTE!! Rekon he does plans to
paint em.

Saturday brought a Davis, sorry forgot the first name, who had just flown
off the time
on his Tri-Q, Lynn French, Jeff LeTempt, Steve Larribee, a KR-2 and a
Cessna 170.
I counted 9 composite's on the flight line and can only remember who 7
were. Sorry
for missing the others.
Several others drove in Sat also. I'm sure Sam and Doug will have all the
info later.

The carb and magneto classes were surprisingly good. I learned alot as my
C-170
has the carb we learned about. The SIU instructor started with the
fundamentals of
carburetion and how they work, went from there to the actual carb and
answered
many questions. GREAT STUFF!!

With the generosity of Sam and his bride Humble, apron and all, grilled
real good
hamburgers complete with all the sides for lunch Sat. And the donation
cup filled
up fast. Good to know people care and appreciate.

Also Saturday brought wx issues for Sunday departures and is why I'm at
my puter now.
After looking at the internet forcast 4 times and visiting with FSS I
left for home at
4:15pm Sat. Flew about 150 miles on just over 3 1/2 gallons. Shortly
after arriving
at Terre Haute it rained for about 2 minutes while the plane was still
outside the hangar
and scattered rain the tstm's are forcast for all day Sunday here. Hated
to miss the
rib supper but that's how it goes sometimes. The flight both ways was a
real delight.
Those of you who are still building, you are in for a real treat when you
fly an x-ctry in
one of these birds. And to you Onan powered Q's out there, done right,
the Onan's
really are solid and x-cty capable. Would sure like to see more at these
fly-in's.
Ya just don't know what it's like till you've been there. GREAT
AIRPLANES.

So that's some of the way it is at the 2005 Spring Fling.

Joe------- I don't know if this will help you but I will explain the
problems I had with my Posa on my turbo Subaru. It did much the same as
yours and I had to shut the key off on final to get it to slow down.
What I found was that I had slightly tightened the screw holding the
small bushing that holds the needle into the slide. This canted the
needle a bit and it would idle when cold and running rich, but once
warmed up it would idle to fast. I am sure the slide would bind a bit
in the throttle body also. I would try to burp the throotle but it would
only help intermitantly. Once I got the needle to travel without
binding it would still not idle down enough. I ended up inserting a
compression spring inside the throttle body. I retrieved this spring
from a Super Posa with the float bowl I had kicking around. This is
what they used . Now it will idle right down to 500rpm if I choose.
If your Revflo is similar to the Posa, when it is idling high is it
possible to insert a screw driver in the top od the throttle body and
physically push the slide down?
If it idles slower after doing this a return spring may be the way to

I used my belly board today. It will obviously allow a Q or D'Fly to get
into a shorter landing strip because it creates drag and drag will reduce
landing rollout. A landing roll without drag is like a ______________ without
__________.

Joe,
I had weird idle issues with my c90 - scat tube was incorrect and doing goofy things especially when carb heat was applied. Ends up, it was always getting carb heat and more when applied. Cowl off it seemed normal on there was a huge drop in rpm and other weirdness.

Not sure if there is a link - just food for thought.

spar.

This was in a Q2 with the LS-1 canard. It broke just inside the fuselage

swerved right, then left, then right and the spar broke. When the
aircraft

The NTSB and the FAA is investigating. I asked the FAA accident
investigator if they would take any action regarding the airplane type and
he said that seeing as it is experimental, it is up to the owner/builders
to
take some action. There probably will be an NTSB accident report as there
was substantial damage to the airplane. I was not injured.

The airplane does not have the wheel alinement.

James the weakness in the kit spar is caused because the CF UNI plies are wrapped inside and out by a single lightweight ply of Glass BID cloth not CF. The original spars therefore have very little hoop strength and when the glass ply is broken the CF separates and the system collapses. My broken spar was caused by impact. It looked like a paint brush.
In addition the plans call for the removal of one of the two outer glass plies to prepare for bonding. This action is very likely to lead to damage of the one remaining outer ply. Maximum stress is found at the centre of the span ie at BL00 near where your spar is broken.
However the system has flown many hours trouble free.

The first Tandem Wing Spring Fling participant, Joe Snow from Euclid, OH
already arrived this afternoon, towing a Q-bird on a trailer.

Beside the Spring Fling extravaganza, the alt.rec.aviation fly-in is being
held at the Pinckneyville airport, just a few miles north of Carbondale.
P'ville is a good place to get gas, and it might be worthwhile to do a low
pass over there once and a while, just to let them know where the REAL
airplanes are headed!

The way to cure the problem you describe is to
install a flush mount
filler in the top of the header with a steel or
aluminum (grounded)
2- 2 1/2" tube just below the header opening. That
way you can fill
the header and main at the same time from the same
opening. This
makes filling both tanks very fast and you know
exactly how much
fuel is in the header and main simply by looking
in the hole. I can
fill my tanks in half the time it takes to fill
the conventional
setup. Sam Kittle has just finished this mod and
can elaborate if
any one is interested.

The only kicker is the header we have is different
than standard! If
you are building and at this stage you may want to
look into this
option. I have 5 years and almost 600 hours on
this mod and it works
well.

I have been scanning the internet looking for ways to properly evaluate
some
flight data I've gathered. I think I found the solution and thought I'd
share it.

The question is "How do I accurately test for performance improvements"?
Ken Paser did a lot of testing as documented in his book "Speed With
Economy" but

I believe I have found a better way. There are a couple of papers out
there
using GPS to determine true airspeed. There are a few different
methods,
but I like the ones published by the National Test Pilot's School.
(Besides, Test Pilot's School sounds cool).

The methods are designed to determine true airspeed, but I would think
it
would be well suited to determining top true airspeed.

The idea is, you go so some convenient altitude - say 5,500 feet, and do
a
full out performance run in either three or four different directions.
You
plug your values into the spreadsheet and voila! You have your accurate
performance with the wind factor removed. The only caveat is that you
should have the same indicated airspeed throughout the test. If your
throttle is shoved all the way forward and locked down, this should be
the
case.

By using this simple test method, one could make performance
enhancements
and then have an accurate method of checking if they really worked.
