Hi Peter,

Posted a few last night under "Dawie's Quickie".
Is your radiator also behind the cockpit? Cooling is the one
thing that is
still not good enough on mine.

Hi All,

Yesterday (27/6) at 10:30 South African time my Subaru EA-82
powered
Quickie
(ZU-BSS) finally turned from a weird looking go-cart into an
aircraft.
Flight took place at Wonderboom airport North of Pretoria,
South
Africa.
Oil
and water temperatures are marginal and we won't get away
with it in
summer.
The extremely capable test pilot (22000 hrs) did a few orbits
overhead,
did
one touch-and-go and one full stop landing.

Re: Quickie 1 engine

David J. Gall

Diego,

A Rotax 277 might have "enough" power to fly a Quickie, but you'd be challenged to fit the muffler within the cowl. The increase in horsepower over the Onan engine would be lost to increased drag from the muffler and the net result would be that you'd still have an underpowered airplane (in my opinion).

Why go to such effort for little or no gain?

Hi, I´m new in the group, I´m from Argentina.
I want to know if it is posible to use in a Q1 a Rotax 277, 337 or a Mosler
(35 HP).
Some of you have experience with this kind of engine?
Thanks ind advance for your kind attention.

Dawie if you send me an email offline I can send you some pics of the dual pass radiator installation. I have not been able to find your address.

Hi Peter,

Posted a few last night under "Dawie's Quickie".
Is your radiator also behind the cockpit? Cooling is the one thing that is
still not good enough on mine.

Hi All,

Yesterday (27/6) at 10:30 South African time my Subaru EA-82 powered
Quickie
(ZU-BSS) finally turned from a weird looking go-cart into an aircraft.
Flight took place at Wonderboom airport North of Pretoria, South Africa.
Oil
and water temperatures are marginal and we won't get away with it in
summer.
The extremely capable test pilot (22000 hrs) did a few orbits overhead,
did
one touch-and-go and one full stop landing.

Re: Posa carbs

Dave Dugas

Richard,
I've been following the Posa carb posts and I'm not sure if this suggestion has been introduced yet. Make sure that the range of travel on your mixture control arm is greater than 90 degrees, just as it shows in the setup instructions. I made a small adjustment to mine and it made a huge difference. Just something to look at....and I hope that I'm not repeating someone elses suggestion. Dave Dugas

Hello Fellas,

It's me again, I've been trying to still get static rpm in my q-
2.
I've check the compression #1 has 160 #2 has 172 #3 has 140 #4
has
170. I have set the valves to .006. I have re checked the timing
its
right on. I have checked the prop its a cowley 45p 56 dia. I've
had
a local gentleman that has only run rev master's to come to look
at
it he has told me that it has not got a big enough carb(34 mm).
The
engine is a 21oo d rev master. So I went to sonex today and the
guy
there said I had to big of a carb and that on the aero V engines
which are 80 cc bigger there running a 32 mm carb and mine is a
34
mm carb. The engine will run up to 2650 rpm which is 3/4 throttle
and after that she falls on her face. Its like its either getting
to
much or not enough fuel. I'm at a loss here and dont want start
speculating and buying parts that I dont need! The other
suggestion
from sonex was to limit the throttle at 2650, I dont know if that
would be a good Idea or not, I surely don't want to find out in
the
air that it wasn't a good idea! I have another carb coming to try
hopefully it will be here today or tommorow but At this point I'm
thinking its not the carb. I'm in need of some good advice for
the
engine. I'm surely not going to take advice from someone who is
more
interested in my wallet then what is actually going on. PLEASE
HELP!!

Re: Stablilty during taxi

rondefly@...

James, did you arrive at the +3 degrees in static conditions? If so, that
would not be accurate. Under live taxi tests it would be much more. Sorta
like trying to hold 50# weight with it not moving, quite a bit different
when it is moving.

Exactly. The canard flexes 3 degrees going from no load to gross so if you
set it at +3 when constructing you may not have to adjust the camber after
building the airplane.

Larry,

Ummmm, I hope I'm misunderstanding your intent, but you don't need +3,
just zero at gross weight. The +3 was a new-construction guideline to make
the wheelpant attachment....

Keep up the good work,

From Postma

I've already pointed out the possibility of weak springs at the
firewall to Severson.
It is probably that I am weak, but my springs are a bear to hook up - on
either side.

I don't believe he has a bellcrank mod but may
be wrong.
It is installed!

I will try to create a +3 degree camber, but I do have the big wheels.

Re: First flight

Dawie

Jim,

Sorry Jim, I see I didn't answer all your questions:

I took the project over when it was 80% complete about 5 years ago. Then I
started the last 80% of the work ! For the last three years I've been hoping
to have it ready for the SA EAA convention. This year I was ready for flight
tests, but various crazy factors (not related to the aircraft) prevented us
from flying before the air show. I did exhibit it though, and it was great
fun to just sit back and listen to the comments from the public. Here are a
few:

"It looks like something from a James Bond movie"
"Is it not one of those glider thingies?"
After realising that the elevator is in front: "It must have taken this guy
years to learn to fly this thing"

Dawie,

Congratulations on your first flight. Those are the defining moments
in life. I bet you still have that smile all over your face. When
did you start construction?

You've done a real nice job. Good luck with your upcoming flights.
Those are the ones that can be particularly interesting. I noticed
you still have the old tailwheel on your bird. You might want to
consider the upgraded Aircraft Products tailwheel assembly later as
they work much better than the original.

Hi Ryan,

A Rotax 912 reduction box. the previous builder already had that on when I
took the project over. It isn't an easy box to convert, as it is normally
very integrated into the rest of the 912 engine, but he did quite a
reasonable job.
