Re: Engine mount question

Thanks Leon. I notice something else about the elevator pushrod geometry, although unrelated. The elevators move about 1/8 to1/4" like aelerons and in the same direction. Maybe this adds to the "aeleron steering" effect.

Torque and the P factor are turning the aircraft away from prop rotation. By trimming the elevator or the ailerons we can offset this and the elevator requires only a very small adjustment. By trimming the correct side up we should get a small reduction in drag as well. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I ran across an interesting thing that may be related to this while reverse engineering the Quickie for my CAD drawings. CSA-6 and CSA-7 (the elevator control arms on the Quickie) do not have the same ratio. I checked 2 sets of parts and they were both identical, and since the parts were all punched out by Ken Brock, I'm assuming that all the Quickie kits had the same different ratio (1/16" or about 5%) elevator links. I don't have any idea if this was intended but the result would be that one elevator would deflect just a bit more than the other - tending to off set "P" factor. One might be able to do the same thing with the Q-2/200...... but IIRC they have identical parts right and left due to the center stick. ====================== Leon McAtee Quickie Builders Association WEB site http://www.quickiebuilders.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ YAHOO! After sifting through all the responses I suppose the best fix is also the easiest. Torque and the P factor are turning the aircraft away from prop rotation. By trimming the elevator or the aelerons we can offset this and the elevator requires only a very small adjustment. By trimming the correct side up we should get a small reduction in drag as well.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
On the other hand if we offset the engine any which way we would bring drag into the equation and torque and P factor are offset by a combination of drag and offset thrust. I wonder why Cessna and all do it that way? (braced for flameout) Peter

From: Peter Harris To: Q-LIST@... Sent: Monday, September 26, 2005 5:41 AM Subject: [Q-LIST] Engine mount question For the purpose of designing the engine mount I have heard four different ideas how to allign the engine to offset torque and P factor. My question is ..Which is best for least drag? 1. AFAIK my Q was set up in the first place with the Revmaster on axis and there was definitely some aeleron offset. 2. When I did the Norton I set up the engine on axis and offset the elevator a very small amount. 3. Some say the engine should be packed with washers for 2 or three degrees of offset to the side and down and no trim. 4. A local guru says the the prop flange should be positioned to intercept the hull axis and the engine mount itself should be offset to one side and down by positioning and packing at the firewall or by offset design of the weldment, and no trim. I am about ready to start the weldment and would be glad to get some advice which is best. I sure know which is easiest. Paul on paper that looks like a perfect choice prop for the Jabiru Q-200 and the performance looks good. As I have started a J6 installation do you have any recommendations re the prop? Re: Onan prop hub and info request

Scott,
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Make sure you get the prop hub that has the big bolt axially down the center, not the one with two bolts that are cross-drilled through the crankshaft. As for improving the Onan installation, the single biggest improvement you could make would be to do the cooling system properly. The Onan wants to be cooled from the exhaust valve side which means that to do it right you'd need to get the cold air to the back side of the engine and have it flow forward. Just copy the stock Onan cooling shroud (in aluminum or glass) and get the air flowing in the right direction.... You could have the cooling outlet(s) on top of the cowl a la Catbird or Adam 500.... Jim, All I could picture in my mind when I read your 1st post was this mini cam pointed, not out the canopy like most of us would do, but back at the pilot, who has this sh*t eaten grin on is face. The Pilot goes home and plays it back and doesn't think he looks so good, so he blames it on the resolution of the mini camera. But I thought you might get offended by that, so I wrote you about the pilot skill thing.
