Has anyone tried heated seat cushions in their Q? It is cold today so I am
thinking about something warm. They work great in the Toyota and seem to be a
good way to stay warm in the winter if the alternator can handle it. Terry,
how many amps does a Lexus seat heater pull?

I had a web site book marked that displays a three day table of

Re: other folks' little (and possibly not so little) darlings breaking the Sp/Strainers, I nearly had one try to use mine as a step to look into the cockpit. I suspect this is the likeliest problem with kids. So as well as the "NO STEP" signs for adults, I also always park the plane with max elevator down trim ie trailing edge highest. So kids' little legs can't reach up far enough. And yes, it's still on the drive, but there's plenty of kids around and it's an attraction.

Yes Paul, balsa is stronger than foam, but it is what you put on the foam
that makes the difference, as it is with our foam construction on the entire
Q. Both the balsa and ply arms broke in that instance, That fellow sold the
dragonfly at that flyin and the people that bought it crashed it on the way
home, don't know what ever happened to it.

Think that whatever you use for material you need to set up a barrier fence
to keep people away from it, (especially small children).

With respect Ron, you can't tell me that foam is stronger than balsa wood.
What actually broke on those sparrow strainers?
The plywood arms, the bond to the elevator or the airfoil itself?
If the airfoil broke, then it would also have broken if made out of foam.
They are vulnerable whatever they are made out of, but if you make them out
of aluminium (or cast iron!) then you may find that the trailing edge of the
elevator breaks first.
Is that a good thing?

Indeed, why not, Damian?
But surely it is a lot easier and quicker to use balsa.
I haven't actually made mine yet, but I think I will stick to balsa, for
those reasons.

Jim, and all who replied. Thanks, the way to sort it appears certain. As I didn't construct that part originally, I don't know how it was done. It's possible that there is a steel plate as mentioned. I'll go digging.... I was a bit reluctant to start until I had a clear idea about what to do to fix it.

OK, thanks Sam, Mike, Jim. I'll replace the drain with a new one.
Unfortunately the previous builder bonded it into the bottom of

I'll need to dig it out and bond in an outer thread and then screw
in a
twist type drain instead of the push-in type I've got. I'm
thinking I'll cut
a largish (about 3", but oval) hole in the bottom of the tank and
replace it
with a 4 to 6 BID plate bonded inside the tank. Oval lets me get
it in place
with an overlap inside. I'll bond in the outer part of the
threaded drain.
Then I can replace it in future if needed.

Help,
I had a web site book marked that displays a three day table of
weather
information. I had to reload AOL and lost it some how and can't figure
out
where I found it. It had columns for specific times of day over a 3 day
period
with rows for cloud cover, temp, wind speed, wind direction, visibility,
chance of precip, ceilings, etc. Would anyone happen to know where it is
located?

Hee hee.....I just love this internet. Here I am, in merry England, arguing the toss with someone thousands of miles away in Lake Tahoe! Or are you somewhere else today, Ron?

I wasn't making a point about strength, but about ease of manufacture, though you don't want to make a sparrow strainer so strong that hitting it may damage the elevator trailing edge.
And that applies to much of the airframe, a transference of stress to an area not designed to take it.

And yes, keep small children, and a lot of adults, away from your pride and joy!

Re: Armrest structure

David J. Gall

Armrests: Most likely they provide torsional stiffness to the fuselage. The
floor and tank makes the bottom surface of the fuselage resist side-to-side
motion, but the open top of the fuselage underneath the canopy can move
side-to-side allowing for an overall "twisty" fuselage. Adding gussets to
the area where the top longerons meet the seatback bulkhead would be an
inconvenient way to add torsional stiffness, but here the armrests can serve
the purpose.

Just my opinion,

David J. Gall

The recent debate about removable armrests got me thinking -
surely they must be an important part of the structure for at
least the following reasons:
1. They help hold down the fuel tank.
2. They create a box structure out of the rear bulkhead, the
fuel tank, and the fuselage floor which would add
significantly to the overall fuselage rigidity between the two wings.
