Ron Weiss-------------- I run a three blade 53 inch Warp drive on my E-81 turbo direct drive. As Jon says , they may not have the best performance , but they are adjustable and don't even flinch in a rain storm. The length will be as much as possible with reasonable clearance .I think the three blade may be smoother. Call Warp drive and ask then to profile your tips for better performance . It's an option on smaller diameter props but worth the price. If you don't know how much hp you will get and at what rpm you will want to cruise at, it's hard to pick a fixed pitch. Kinda like a stab in the dark. Your engine may have a sweet spot for cruising at 5200 rpm instead of 5500 so an adjustable comes in real handy. I like my warp drive and I'll be using one on my 2.5 turbo when it's ready. Have fun------------ Canada Chris

Anyone here read German? If so, is the word "vertical" in the English
translation below a correct interpretation of the meaning of the original German text? 5.3 Propellers without index pins or drive bushing bores: remove the spark plug from the cylinder nearest to the propeller and turn the crankshaft until TDC is reached. 5.4 Install the propeller (applicable for 2-blade models, only) in this crankshaft position with the blades in the most vertical direction. Torque flange bolts or stop nuts crosswise two by two. Do not forget the washers. Safety wire in pairs with 0.032" stainless steel. The position of 3- or 4-blade propellers relative to the crankshaft is not as critical, unless specifically required. Thanks, David J. Gall _____ From: Q-LIST@... Earnest,
Could it be a bad translation from the German? I checked the installation instructions on the MT-props website and I could find no reference such as you describe for their fixed-pitch two-blade prop. http://www.mt-propeller.com/pdf/manuals/e-112.pdf. Jay <scheevel@...>
Ron Weiss wrote:
"...because all the info I can get is that some reduction units don't like 2 bladed wood props(harmonic issues). One guy used a Prince and liked the performance, but, there was this vibration?...." It sounds like the problem may not be the prop by itself. I would look instead at the prop/reduction drive combination. The two components together may produce the harmonic vibration that is noted. Let me explain: If the reduction drive assembly is not stiff enough, then it also can contribute to the harmonics of the system. The prop itself is not designed to be completely stiff (nor should it be), but props are designed and balanced so as not to destructively resonate on their own. However, when a prop is bolted to another assembly that is not stiff enough, the elastic/inertial response of the combination could produce unanticipated harmonic oscillations. In the traditional aircraft installation, the prop is bolted to the crankshaft (prop-flange), which is VERY stiff and is also dampened by the engine mass. In this case, the harmonic modes of the prop/engine combination are outside the range of any prop oscillation modes, so significant harmonic oscillations are effectively damped. This may not be the case when the prop is connected to a reduction drive where the reduction drive is less stiff than the standard crankshaft. This is probably part of the reason the FAA certifies prop-engine combinations instead of just the prop. Something to consider.. Jay Scheevel - Tri-Q, still building
