Normally I would concur, except in the specific case of glueing multiple sheets to obtain the block thickness needed for wing/canard cores, it apparently has been tried with fatal results. So has mix-it-yourself foam met with similar fatal results. That's why this particular topic draws so much ire from the "old heads" on this list: their warnings are not "theoretical speculations" but cautions based on historical evidence. David J. I've tried to stay out of this discussion but just can't resist. 8-) I lurk on this list because I want to build a Q-200, so I'm learning as I get my affairs in order. Going back to the original question about glueing foam blocks together. I don't really have a problem with you experimenting. Matter of fact, I would encourage it. After all, it's called experimental for a reason. But, there are several things to think about. 1 - If you are deviating from the plans and this is purely a mental exercise, you should really just stop right there. You are wasting peoples time and getting everyone frustrated. Not helpful to your cause. 2 - If you deviate from the plans, then you need to make sure your engineering is rock solid. Design your idea, test your idea, refine your idea, rinse, and then repeat.. Do this a few times. Otherwise, someone is likely to get hurt. I trust the plans because they came from a professional aeronautical engineer, Rutan, and have stood the test of time. It's well understood and I can draw on lots of peoples advice. 3 - You have to ask yourself are you an engineer or a builder? I do s/w & h/w engineering professionally for many companies. I can very quickly work through problems and get them implemented. I've looked at and done some simple design work on aero structures. It's a slow process that takes time to do correct. It's fun to do and satisfies my mental curiosity. But, at the end of the day, it does take time away from organizing my shop, looking for a kit/project to purchase, etc. So I say to myself, is it better to spend the time designing a new process to glue blocks together or to actually build something? Usually the answer, for me, is it is better to be building or working on my composite techniques. 4 - Lastly, people will strongly discourage you because they don't want to see people perish for an avoidable reason/s. If you stick to the plans, you will get a result that is well understood and reproducible. Your pilot skills and risk level might still get you killed. But, at least the plane won't come apart on you while flying. Hope my comments help. -brad w.

Yes, must be our brothers keepers. I have had THREE Quickie friends die in their aircraft, and the are plenty more whom I didn't personally know. So when I see someone going off on some untried tangent, it raises my red flags. But like Jim, at least I can take some comfort in knowing that the chances are 99.9% the aircraft will never get as far as a test flight. Plus, discussions of untried ideas really tends to waste everybody's time. Personally, I don't mind if people contact me directly for a quick answer, then everybody else doesn't have to look at it. A nice liberal idea except that an unsuspecting amateur following another experimenting amateur can get killed or damaged.
So... the experimenter ought to be required to vett himself with his background of experience,engineering or otherwise and report
on actual +or-- experience not just speculate for others to emulate.
I'd like to see just ONE speculator finish and fly an airplane (I've been waiting 30+ years), with modern materials and ideas. let everyone and anyone comment about anything Q related. Let's not be precious about it, the group needs livening up.
