Talked to a few people at Kevin’s spring fling about this, but a few pictures are better than a lot of talk. I superimposed some Langley Wind tunnel pics on top of the Q canard so you can see where the turbulent air mass caused by the stall ends up. Obviously over-rotation is not a good thing. This could happen in an accelerated maneuver or on the runway in a Tri-Q. If it happens on the runway (only possible in a Tri-Q), the CG rotates aftward very close to, or perhaps even behind, the main gear axis and there is no recovery except to apply brakes and get the nose back down. If I can get my TXP antenna fixed I hope to "bomb" the Bi-Plane event in a couple of weekends in northern Kansas.

Hi Bruce,

I tried lots of spots! I ended up with with a flat round "slot type" L-Band antenna in the luggage compartment inside the aircraft. It works great!

It sounds like your trying one of those short whip antennas. They are the worst but they work if you put a piece of aluminum for a ground plane.

Going to the wing tip is not great, too long a run. Inside the cowl, really bad. Really, check out the slot antennas on eBay, no ground plane needed and it doesn't stick out in the airstream!

Bad thing is some need a weird connector ... for the AO912, which I have a spare!

Or serach eBay for AO912 L-band is a flush mount, annular slot antenna

FYI, this link is to the one I got on eBay for $35! This article LINK talks about the different gains and says a Slot antenna is 2 to 4 db better than a blade antenna. I think the biggest advantage is the Slot type doesn't need a ground plane so is very nice on our plastic airplanes!

Maybe it was the close proximity to the engine or something else is effecting it.  It just has about a 3' run of coax from the TXP.   I was wiping oil off the belly and broke the antenna off.  So would the antenna be better off on the wing tips to avoid the clutter of the cockpit?  My comm antenna is behind the split line so I want to keep it away from there as much as possible.

Jay, good luck on your upcoming flight. Remember it’s just an airplane.................(that’s never been in the air)🙂. 

If things get ugly, just fly the airplane. This will be one of the more memorable events of your life, so don’t pop the cork until you are ready to take a drink!

As you get close to blast off, pressure comes from all different directions to fly, don’t secumb to it. You’ll know when it’s time. Double and tripple check every nut and bolt. Have others you trust eyeball everything. You’ll be fine.
