Re: Tires - Whatcha Got?
Sounds like you have your brake pad issue figured out. If not, I think I have the original Airheart brake pads, never used, from my Q-200 kit and I will see if I can locate them. Tri-Q kit came with its own wheels and brakes. If you really are using 5 X 5.00 tires, the diameter is the critical item to make sure you have the same clearance of the wheel pant to the wheel and the runway. I have put AIR HAWK 500-5 6PLY TIREs on my Tri-Q2. These tires go on same wheel as the Lamb tire. So far, I like the new tires. Don't wear as fast and smooth out some of the cracks in my home runway. The diameter of the whole assembly went from 11" to 13" when I changed from the Lamb tires. The AIR HAWK tire is available from Spruce for $$. Cheers, Jay Scheevel, Tri-Q@ N8WQ

Re: Tires - Whatcha Got?
Great thanks. I will try the soft ones to maintain better performance when colder outside.

Re: Tires - Whatcha Got?
It really doesn’t matter whether you use soft or hard pads. Their cheap, get both types any try them. I don’t see s lot of difference in performance.

Re: Tires - Whatcha Got?
Hey Sam!
Airheart is the company I am speaking with and they are wanting to know which ones (hard or soft). I think I am going to with soft as it looks to resemble the pads on their now. I was back taxiing to depart on my first solo when the brake issue surfaced. Lots of drag on left side and when we removed the caliper and pads we could see plenty of "gunk" and a very unevenly worn pad. Corbin

Looks like you've got larger tires than I do. I use the original 11x4.00-5 size tire inflated to 50 psi. Paul Fisher Q-200 N17PF

Re: Tires - Whatcha Got?
Corbin. Forget the hard or soft pads, I think that's old old documentation. Simply get the Airheart pads from wherever you can find them. I think there is an Airhart manufacturer, maybe in Minnesota,? They are also available through go-cart sales organizations. As for tires, there is a variety of different styles you'll see on aircraft, I use the 8 ply tires formerly called lamb tires. So, I didn't see your flight report here. What's the deal with that? Sam

Tires - Whatcha Got?
While working on brakes, it is a good time to replace my tires (500-5). Any suggestions for brand/model and ply rating? I think 4 ply is the most common on the Q200's but that's me just going off PSI of 35-40. I think 6 ply is up to 50psi which I was thinking was getting high for the weight of these planes. Any suggestions are welcome.

Replacement Brake Pads - Hard or Soft Linings?
My brakes are Hurst Airheart 150 x 1 hydraulic caliper brakes and I am wanting to replace the pads. It looks like the parts diagram shows hard pads (linings) for soft pads and I was curious what most people are using. I would like to order quickly and get flying again soon. Mine is a Q200... Re: Lots of questions.
Wow Allan, that's a very general statement that could get someone killed. One thing I never liked about the GU canard was that the Spar ended 4 feet from the end of the wing and back 20+ years ago I was reading about hard landings breaking the canard at that point. Ya can't fix that with VG's!

Re: Flight Video's
VG’s work!!! Before I could sense moisture by the stick before mist on the canopy. Standing Puddles would form ahead of the elevator as you get the sinking feeling. With VG’s mist and light rain no problem fine droplets running back no puddles no stick feel.

I think but have not tried just the inside third of the wing might stop the separation bubble from forming at the root and creeping out the elevator. Charlie

Re: Flight Video's
Your plane had a RevMaster first. (Never ever flew that way).
Mark’s first venture into moisture/rain with GU was interesting. He was in front, we saw a large cloud ahead and headed for it. He started a gradual decent later full stick back, still no joy! This started about 3 miles from the cloud. As soon as we passed to the other side, his control returned. He returned and quickly designed 8 vg’s, 4 on either side. He pincil whipped it and declared all was well! (Mark is a uniquely and talented individual). We flew in this config and saw dramatic improvement in weather. He later flew the Q out of Truckee for a couple of years before selling it to Martin, a really nice fella. Jim N46JP - Q200

Hey Jim,

Always great to learn more about the history. I purchased from Jason and Martin in March of this year. The recommended 22 VG’s each side was deemed excessive so 11 each side were applied. The RV lure lives on and is still there! You can probably see it in one of the videos on YT. Really cool hearing from people that know this plane! Thanks, Corbin

Re: Flight Video's
Hey Corbin,
Mark Summers built your plane here in Livermore. We built at the same time and I flew chase on his first flight. I also found the 0200 you now run. Mark is retired from Livermore Lab and happily living in the Rockies. He built and flys a beautiful Legacy. The work Mark did on your Q was impeccable. I notice the plane now has a lot more than the ones Mark designed. He only ran 4 per side and cured the rain bug problem. He later sold it to Martin Skilby. What happened to the “RV LURE” Mark has on the tail? Good luck with your first flights! You have a solid plane. Jim Patillo N46JP - Q200

Remember there's nothing wrong with the GU canard that VGs won't fix. It is very strong and doesn't need the carbon spar.

Hi Dustin,
I suggest you follow the advice of the voices you are hearing on this group that are suggesting to either fabricate or buy pre-built replacement wings. Basically, you cut the old ones off and reattach the new ones. Sounds ominous, but it is relatively easy to do with good results. Sam Hoskins has done this on his plane several times and can explain the "Mr. Sawsall" technique.
Also, my wife and all of her sisters grew up in Waynesboro, so I am very familiar with your location. We will be back in that area for a family reunion at the end of July. I would be happy to come by and have a look at your project. If you can get some wings by then, I can help you evaluate the quality and condition of them. Let me know.

Re: Lots of questions.
Dustin..
I have quite a bit of the original orange foam from an unfinished Q kit I purchased back in 2000. I do not plan on using it since I purchased completed surfaces that I know are correctly constructed. The foam was cut that I have, but never sanded after hotwire
nor were any ply's applied. I have them in a storage unit about 50 miles from my home. They are in the Tulsa area. Perhaps photos of these would clarify if you are interested. They have never been exposed to UV that I am aware of. I'd have to verify if the
Canard is the improved airfoil. You may have this material free of charge but the logistics of moving it to Va may not be worth the trouble to you. There were no spars in the kit I purchased. I was more interested in the paperwork and fuselage shells and
the price was right for those items.

Sam, I’m in Waynesboro, VA.
Thanks for all the input. The feedback from everyone on and off the forum was very helpful.. My next logical step is to focus on sanding the forward fuselage to evaluate its condition. I have a lot of confidence in it as I've already finished sanding the tailcone down and it looks great. The interior is bare glass. The only thing left that I can't see is the exterior of the fwd fuselage.
I tend to be to be to much if a perfectionist (that's what I hear at work), so building the wings new from scratch actually sounds kind of fun. I was just wanting to get in the air in two years as opposed to four.
Thanks again, Dustin

I am close but not yet. I got very busy for a few weeks and couldn't get out to the hangar. I have eight landings in the left seat now.....getting close to solo! I might not get to fly again until Sunday late afternoon. Corbin
