Big question: I’d like to use an auto alternator to save money and to be able to get one quick. But mine is a rear drive/mount to engine. Any auto alternators out there I could use? Current one is made by Ford but for “airplanes”.

Re: Alternator Failed

Hi Corbin,
My suggestion is to take it apart and see what failed.  Maybe first make sure you have some voltage (8-12) on the field when the airplane is powered on.  No field voltage means your regulator is most likely the issue.   Disconnect the field wire and measure the resistance to ground, should be a few hundred ohms.  If it measures open then your problem is the field.  The alternator comes apart real easily.  3 screws.  If I remember it has brushes in there for the field. Easy to replace if I remember.  If you get it apart you'll see i think 6 big diodes on two metal plates.  These diodes can short out but you'll have to unsolder the wires attached to them to measure them.  Are the big coils all black... then toss it.

Let us know what you find.  I got a scrap one in the hangar for parts but in 34 years I haven't needed it.

Sandy and I, along with a few street urchins, made it in today, just fine in our Winnebago. We are parked way out in the boonies at 21st and Arbor.

I was able to sneak in this morning. I camped out at portage with a bunch of guys who were stuck waiting for parking to dry out for certified stuff. I managed to time things out just perfectly and come in up in the fast lane. I think I was one of the first few airplanes they let in this am. Right after I landed I got a text update that they were backed up at Fisk for over an hour.

Corbin- you shouldn’t have any problem with parking. Experimental don’t really ever run out of space. Call me regarding tie downs if you want to come.

I was considering flying up Wednesday.  However, I let a buddy borrow my Claw tie down system so I don't have a good solution to keep her safely planted.  Also, not sure what status of parking availability would be.

Whole lotta building goin’ on. Don’t want to make it look too much like a double-wide! Not in Oklahoma, if you know what I mean. Maybe a little brick on the sides would do the trick. Can’t wait to see it in person.

Cheers,

The Rutan tribute aircraft, 9 of us, will be parked on the West extension of the homebuilt parking and moved to the plaza Thursday.  We are the 5th performance at about 1500 then recover on the plaza staying there till Friday.  Right now, being the Quickie is the slowest, I will be assigned at 300’ with the rest of the  Rutan designs up from there.  Of course much can change before then.

Grass Valley/Nevada County Airshow

Jim Patillo

We had another very successful Airfest/Airshow in the Gold Country foothills yesterday.

This place is pretty cool because of the many current and retired military living legends here. Beale, Mather, Travis, and McClellan AFB’s are close by.

Triple Ace Bud Anderson, General Chuck Yeager, U2, SR71 pilots and many WW2 and Vietnam Combat Vets (I’m proud to be one) live nearby. Many were here.

I met Dustin, (Mathew Curio’s hangar mate), who flew up in a C47! Nice fella.

I flew in the Airshow at noon yesterday representing the Q community and attached a quick video😊

As usual the Q was one of the stars of the show. Nonstop people asking about the design.
