Re: Update: Faucet Fuel Pump Ticking Sound w/ Plenty of Fuel
First off, IMHO, never ever use vinyl tubing. When exposed to fuel it shrinks and hardens. This can lead to air leaks at the fittings. QAC said to use the vinyl tubing, but that was over 40 years ago. I have found that even a very small amount of air in the lines, bubbles so small that they are difficult to see, cam make your pump rattle. I have recently had good luck with the blue tinted urethane tubing available from Aircraft Spruce.

Re: Update: Faucet Fuel Pump Ticking Sound w/ Plenty of Fuel
Hi Corbin,
Is your line from the pump to the main tank a flexible or a hard (aluminum) line? If it is flexible, I would suggest fashioning a replacement for that line out of clear vinyl tubing, then turn on the pump and look for bubbles. If no bubbles, go back to your previous line and don’t think about it any more. If it is a hard line, you may need to buy some barbed fittings for both tubing ends that will match the flared fitting size, but you can do the same exercise with the clear vinyl tubing.
Just FYI, I have two identical Facet pumps that were installed at the same time 90 operational hours ago and were new out of the box. One of them pumps the output from the fuel selector directly to the throttle body regulator and is very quiet. The other pumps from the main to the header and is very noisy, so go figure. As long as your pump is new, is not pumping air (check with temporary vinyl line), and is moving fuel at the rate you need, you should be good to go. In other words, I do not think noise is a firm diagnostic.
Cheers, Jay

I couldn't find my previous thread on this so thought I would start a new one. My transfer pump (Faucet), when running with plenty of fuel in the main tank, now clicks/ticks just like when the fuel is low (air). To be sure it wasn't the fuel pump starting to fail, I went ahead and replaced it with a new one since that is a cheap and easy process. However, the new one also clicks/ticks. It seems to be pumping plenty of fuel as it will quickly start to return from the header, as normal.

Have you ever put any car gas in the tank, as apposed to Avgas. I’ve read that this can rot the seals in the pumps. I’ll try and find the article for you.

I have 3 Faucet pumps on my Tr Q. They also click and tick. I’ve never thought anything of it. Even when I installed my 3rd, it made the same noise.
Hope this helps

Hi Brad,

Any chance I could get a copy of what you have drawn thus far? I have a Q2 that I rebuilt years ago with a Subaru 1.8 liter, then crashed. I need to replace the canard and firewall and thought maybe a new drawing would help get me going on the the effort. So any SolidWorks drawing would be much appreciated. The bird has been hanging from the ceiling since 2005 and I finally have the house at a point where I can think about the QBird......200 hours of the most fun I have ever had in an airplane! Dave

I have some of the plane drawn up in solidworks I’d be willing to team up with someone and get it finished up. I have my own Q2 to finish and I like to do things right the first time. Sorry I know this is an older message and I don’t respond

If you read the part of the plans about installing the bulkheads, they allow the builder to vary the angle and size of that bulkhead to compensate for pilot size. There is also some variation allowed in the forward/back position of the main tank for the same reason. I would just suggest rotating the base of the bulkhead backward until it intersects the fuselage. The original plan required a lot of cutting and fitting. The 4 fuselage shells were oversized and needed to be trimmed and there were no marks to help the builder do this, only small drawings. There was a lot of work involved to get a good fit between fuselage and bulkheads. No two of these planes are identical once they are complete.

Yup, that’s right. Do you have a angel between the seat bulkhead top und bottom? Not sure which angle they should? Something else between 130° and 150° maybe?

Maybe you could have a machinist help you produce return oil tubes like the ones in my picture. It's been awhile since I flew a VW so I can't remember how they are configured. My VW didn't like me very much so I am in awe of you expertise!

Oil return tubes
I installed the port oil return tubes several months ago and just recently fixed an oil seep around the left front cylinder base thru bolts and was bragging about how I don’t have any oil on the belly of my TrQ 200.
Then I noticed the starboard side of the belly started to have a small stream of oil on it. So I pulled the cowl and the older model oil return tubes were seeping a bit. So today I replaced the last 4 oil return tubes on the starboard side. Hoping for the best. In the mean time while I have the exhaust off on the starboard side I took it into a welder to weld little bumps on the pipe inside the cockpit heat muff to make more heat inside the cockpit. Hoping to get it back in the air next week and see how everything works out! Stay tuned!
