Bruce,

I've got a Q project and have been wanting to come to one of these for a while. I RSVP'd for September but, that being said, I have two side gigs coming up that might rob me of my chance to make it to this one.  I have to deliver a Breezy XC to its new owner, and I also have been contracted to do the flight testing on a RV-9A.  I'll try to keep you posted if either of those get moved and I'm unable to make it.

Re: Balance

Jay Scheevel

Flutter is a function of vortex oscillation, which should be damped by having a proper offsetting mass balance, but damping also requires a stiff couple between the mass balance and the control surface.

I have not heard of a critical flutter incident in a Q (maybe someone else on the list has heard of one?). Just to be sure though, I decided to eliminate as much slop in the mass coupling as possible by putting one mass balance arm directly on each elevator.

I am pretty sure most arrangements will be effective, but you don't want to be the one who finds the exception, so give it some careful thought.

Cheers,
Jay

I have two mass balances on the elevator. Mounted outboard next to the fuselage walls on the inboard end of the elevator torque tube linkage. This is so that they do not have the elevator linkages involved, more like conventional aircraft systems.

Cheers,
Jay

Hi Jerry,

75,000 acres burning in the bookcliffs and Roan plateau, only 10% contained. another 10,000 burning in Glenwood Canyon. I-70 has been closed for a week. Very hot and dry here. Kind of a shame. A few ranches threatened, but otherwise just wild lands. You know this area, so I give you details. Hoping for rain but none in sight.

Cheers,
Jay

I had no idea CO is on fire.  How far from you, in what direction?  We had a 5.1 earthquake a couple of hundred miles east of us.  Supposed Atlanta felt it.  Neither Nancy nor I felt it but our neighbors said they did. We were having breakfast at the time.   I may have to check my pulse.

Very nice Jerry. Are those little red flags, so that cars can see you when you are pedaling around the block?   I think I am going to steal your town name for a little while. The fires east of us are huge and winds are bringing clouds of smoke over us that are so thick they are “snowing” ash. Even floats into the hangar with the door closed, so I think we are going to be Ash-ville for a while.

Cheers,

Jay
