Mint quality CORVAIR flight engine available

Anyone interested in this corvair aero engine conversion, let me know. This is an engine expert who put it together and is on one of my other groups. Below is the explanation of what is included and how well crafted this build is. Maybe Pat Panzera can pass it around also.

Here is Ron's note to me:
"Jay/Others: Please be my guest to share the photos with whom you feel might benefit. This would be one of the lightest CORVAIR flight engines you will find with many premier upgrades. It features a 3.645" bore with ARIES forged pistons, SALIH Aluminum finned centrifugally cast iron lined cylinder barrels, all reciprocating parts are balanced to within 1 gram and the rotating mass was spun and dynamically balanced (as close as I could get it). The cam shaft is a reground OTTO "OT-10" with new valve lifters and new "fail-safe" timing gears. The engine features a "5th bearing on the prop end to protect the crankshaft from gyroscopic prop loads (analogous to the Jab/CAMIT double front crankshaft bearings). The cylinder heads have been completely upgraded with new bronze valve guides, new Stainless Steel valve seats, SS one piece valves, new springs ---. The combustion chambers were volume matched to within 0.1 cc and I took great pains with all clearances and tolerances throughout the entire engine. All external steel parts were electroless nickel plated and in addition I then powder-coated all parts that you see in black with the exception of the flywheel and starter field housing (they are baked on urethane "PPG Concept"). The charging system is similar to the belt driven CAMIT set-up; but, I used a 20 amp DYNAMO, driven by a Kevlar "V" belt. The starter is NIPPON DENSO, I feel that they make the best starters in the industry. In short I went through ever aspect of the engine to insure that it was up to aircraft flight standards, MPI inspected, NEW or completely re-worked. I am known for being VERY particular, especially when it comes to my airplane work.

The engine has been run on a test stand (several times) with the prop you see and a large cooling hood; it has been broken in. I have NOT run it on a dynamometer but I estimate the power output to be in the 100 + hp range. It is impressively smooth. I enjoyed the build process and took ~ 3 years of my leisure time to complete the project. The carburetor is a certified Marvel Schebler MA-3 SPA with all the current updates---brass float one piece venturi---. I have provisions for both cabin heat and carburetor heat (both sides of the engine exhaust system have a heat muff). I took great pains to build it right.

The KR guys really like the CORVAIR note http://www.n56ml.com/. A strong CORVAIR will pull a good KR at ~ 200 + mph in straight and level flight. I have seen 174 mph in my SONEX in straight level flight but remember my stall is < 40 mph with full flaps and the KR is ~ 60 mph or so, the old adage of thrust vs drag-- lift vs mass---the KR wing is thin and made to go fast but physics demands the loss of lift.

Anyway the synopsis in a nutshell and a neat project that few would undertake or be able to accomplish. I have procrastinated the sale of my CORVAIR project but I am now ready to let-er go. I have the 54" X 58" SenSenich prop, the fiberglass nose bowl and the powder coated 4130 SONEX engine mount shown in the photographs all to market. I have the 3300 Jab currently housed and flying in my plane and an extra early model "solid lifter" Jab 3300 engine with NEW < 70 hour CAMIT cylinder heads pickled and ready for back-up if needed. I just cannot see keeping the CORVAIR any longer.

Thanks Chris, your picture is similar to the idea I had to use an extra arm to extend the right rudder cable mount so it is in a straighter line down the center.
I was also going to put in a second set of pedals but make them so they could easily be removed.
I didn't think of running both cables down the middle but that sure looks interesting.
What size tubing did you use? The pedals I have are made from 1/2".

Mike-------------  I ran my cables down the center consol.  I have some nyloseal tubing glued in the inside upper corners.

The cables stay in the center all the way to the back. I have dual rudder pedals and dual control sticks. Single throttle

 and boost. Works well for letting others fly.  This is almost a copy of the Dragonfly so I claim no credit.

 Managed the get the throttle and boost control cables fitted. If you think it will take two hrs,

allow two days.---------------  Chris

The rudder pedals are my next step and I'm not sure how I'm going to run them ( 1 on the right side or down the center console.)

I'm trying to do everything under the panel in an order that I put the hardest to route things in first and in a way that they don't interfere with a future install of another part.

 

Anybody else want to chime in?

A picture is worth a thousand words for me ...feel free to send some along, particularly how you routed the cables

I never put rudder pedals on the passenger side and I don't regret it.  When I'm on a trip with the wife I put the heaviest bag in front of her feet thus allowing me to carry more baggage.  Also, I don't have to worry about a passenger restricting or stomping on a rudder pedal at the wrong time.

On your panel.   Forward hinged canopy.  How do you release the canopy if you want to bail out.  Or if your upside down in a corn field?

The Fuel site gauge doesn't go all the way to the top of the panel so you'll only see the header tank fuel level when it's about 1/2 full.

Those card compasses.  I really dislike them.  They bounce all over.  I've even seen mine rotate in a full circle from vibration.  I got rid of it like 20 years ago.  Maybe it's just there to meet the FAR requirement of having a compass?

Tell me your not running a vacuum pump and vacuum gauges... Those things are terribly unreliable and of course will fail when you need them the most!  Get something like a Dynon Avionics D10A.  One instrument will replace your compass, and 6 round gauges and eliminate your vacuum pump.  My Dynon D10 has been in the plane 20 years and it's basically flawless.

That intercom? Looks to be where the passengers left leg goes.  I assume your not going to carry passengers cause that thing in a crash should cut the passengers left leg pretty bad.

Whoopity doopity!  Way to go Big K!  I flew my buddy Gene Martin for .6 hrs today.  70 degrees!  Gene was probably a bit underwhelmed as he flies a fast Lancair with a pumped 160 horse. Luv!  Still 153 mph at 24 squared at bad for 100 ponies!  Smooth and cool 63 degrees at 3500’.  These Q’s are soo comfortable.  Should have gone cross country!

TO on 29 was as usual with wind 280 at 5. Climb out was great. 1000FPM at 120 mph. Crystal clear above the haze layer, about 3000’MSL.
Did maneuvers and steep turns to get re-aquanted with the old girl.
Perfect day!!

Back to AP for LDG. I only hope I can continue to land like that one. If it were any better it would have been prefect.
Big smile. Had a Cirrus on my tail so I cleared the runway quickly, all good.

So I finally made it into the log book for 2021!
1.4 hours, one landing. I'm still not current, but what the hell, I will fix that soon!

Two weeks ago the high on Sunday was -5°F. This is much better. Supposed to be in the high 50’s next week.

TO on 29 was as usual with wind 280 at 5. Climb out was great. 1000FPM at 120 mph. Crystal clear above the haze layer, about 3000’MSL.
Did maneuvers and steep turns to get re-aquanted with the old girl.
Perfect day!!

Back to AP for LDG. I only hope I can continue to land like that one. If it were any better it would have been prefect.
Big smile. Had a Cirrus on my tail so I cleared the runway quickly, all good.

So I finally made it into the log book for 2021!
1.4 hours, one landing. I'm still not current, but what the hell, I will fix that soon!

Happy New Year! Or so it seems. FINALLY got in my first flight today!
Nearly 50°F with an inversion. Didn’t use the cabin heat. Tried it for a while, but got too hot!!

The standard Comm runs $995 and the Transponder with ADSB out runs $2499 with prebuilt wire harness. The Comm's do have a 2 place intercom system as standard equipment.

Mike----------  From my basic investigating it seems that Icom is about the  longest com around. It will be used in the Seahawker, so there is no waste.  The Garmin transponder will also fit [ I think].  If a person was stuck, you could make a little standout to incorporate the longer instruments. Even an angled stand out facing the pilot would work well.   take care-----------  Chris
