Re: Resin volume placed on foam

smeshno1@...

I have driven between Frankfurt and Munchin, in Winter; and travelled from Autobahn 7 to 3 through Wuerzburg. The Bavarian flag is on my home here in Mannford, Oklahoma. My Grandfather arrived from Dresden, immigrated to the States prior to the first world war in 1910. Both he and my Father were expert mechanics and machinists but neither were pilots nor interested in learning to fly.

About the cowling..indeed..consider the entire cowling. German technical experience in composites manufacture are very accurate in the correct resin and processes for this material. Much has to do with the finish on the woven fiber to assist in resin binding, and Kevlar with this improved finish is available in Europe. Kevlar is quite effective in sound deadening. It is difficult to cleanly cut, but the lightness and great strength make it worth the effort. If you lived in other Nations in Europe I would hesitate to suggest this but sailplane aircraft in Germany are advanced in this material use.  I do not have Q1 engineering on hand. It would be worth your time to locate the sailplane builders and visit with them about 100% Kevlar and also the hybrid/blended composite fabrics. I am sure they will be very interested in you Q!! It is unique. Probably few if any have ever seen one.

I am aware that the racing engine builders of your engine have improved greatly the performance and durability. I once flew a Q1 with the Onan 22hp (weak). There was another builder in the area at the time modified a Norton Rotary from a motorcycle in his aircraft. He used a machined belt drive he engineered and machined in his own shop. Noisy but it was powerful for the size.

In production settings we use rubber caul sheets to capture the parimeter of parts. It prevents the fabric from creeping over edges and bonding as described. Then again..money spent but time saved.

Vern,
we stay in Wuerzburg area in Bavaria between Nuernberg and Frankfurt.

In which area of the cowling you mean to replace it with Kevelar 49? Any picture or small sketches available?

For the Q1 I choice a B&S Vanguard 679cc comes in standard performance with 23hp and additional some modifications I will placed like, High compression cast pistons, Billet rods with racing spec. bolts, Timing advanced 8°, Longer duration camshaft to shift the power band upwards, Upgraded valve gear to give more valve lift, stronger parts and prevent valve bounce, free flow filter and adapter ‘High altitude’ jet kit, Tuned length exhaust pipes, although simpler one may work well too. The requested parts will come from the US because they are some very proficient companies to support that engine.

So far the next parts are in the bag, it´s the Bulkhead 153.7 and AFT Canopy Bulkhead. But in that case I turn the top to bottom, because the vacuum causes the glass fibre to wrap around the corner of the prey part and thus the end faces are also glued together, which then has to be removed with a cutter.

Best regards

Eugen

Happy belated birthday Terry! Looking forward to seeing you and your Cozy in September. Nice to hear that you will be retiring soon. Us retired folks are always seeking new retirees to fly with. Take care.
