Great work! Las Cruces? Are you near Alamo? My homestead is in Boles. I'm wanting to finish out my Q200 to make it from NE Oklahoma to Alamogordo with a 30 minute reserve. Time will tell and I may have to fill up once on the way there.

Re: New Instrument Panel (non-Q)
I have a question on the new install, Jon. Does your EFIS provide an audio warning in the headsets in case any of the parameters you establish
become out of bounds? So I admit I am old skool and slow to take on technology..but one feature on my Dodge truck is in fact it does "chime"
when anything is exceeded. Alternator output for instance was too high (the regulator triodes fried)... bing bing bing. So I ran the scan quickly
and the culprit was pretty obvious and the warning light flagged the reason as well. So ..yes.. it is much improved...I suspect lighter as well?
Reading steam gauges is how I learned to fly. I also learned to ride a bike that had ZERO carbon fiber on it anywhere. By the way..you probably
flew over or near my old stomping grounds of the West Mesa in Taos County. Tres Orejas mountian was in my back yard.
Name of the village is Carson. No stoplights..no stop signs. No gas station. Post office and a small grocery.. and a volunteer fire department station.

For the last several years I've been promising something better at FOD to each person that has glanced at my instrument panel and had the 'oh… yuck…' look. This has been going on for so many years that I was running the risk of becoming 'that guy' and getting the funky chicken award. I also wanted ADS-B out so I could once again use all that airspace above 10,000'. So, something had to be done.
I REALLY dislike taking my airplane out of service. A week of that is tough on me, two weeks is nearly unbearable. Obviously, I need more airplanes. Last Saturday (10/23) I went for a nice breakfast flight to Los Cruces, toured the southern border, and then made a run north up the continental divide (similar to this flight from last winter but with less white: More Snow on the Mountains of New Mexico!). We were then scheduled to have a wind event for most of the week. I decided the time had come and the work started immediately upon landing.
My old panel looked like this during that flight. I know… old, patch work, yucky...
The next Saturday (10/30) I was off on a breakfast flight with this new panel:
Some small bits of work remain but that goes without saying since homebuilts are never done.

I've had an engine monitor for years and already knew that it is an amazing tool. I've also been flying with moving map apps (and cellular weather) for a long while. Nonetheless, I've wanted an EFIS for a long time but now that I've got 4-5 hours with it - I am AMAZED and wish I had done it long ago!! The amount of information available and visualizations (e.g. EGT/CHT temps graph over time) are crazy neat. Of course, everyone's mission and needs are different but be please be aware that there are some relatively affordably priced products available with tremendous capability. The WOW list is very long and I don't want to sound like a marketing brochure so suffice to say that I am seriously impressed!! Given the places I fly, I'm kinda ho-hum about ADS-B traffic but certainly interested in the weather and elimination of the 10,000' limitation. Eventually, I'll add the servos and hookup the autopilot but need some time to de-stress from being out of service for so long!!! I'm the current holder of the FOD 'Most Deviation from Plans' award (and wire brush) - I'm not sure if this panel redo will ensure that I retain that award or swing me a bit closer to compliance…. Time will tell. Somewhere in the Southwest flying an RV-4

Terrible. 🙂 Most snow I have seen since 2016 was 60 CM.. it was gone in 3 days.

Chris Walterson
The progress report on the Q 200 is, there is no progress. I had two hrs of testing done and then the weather came in. For the last two weeks it is snow, sleet, rain , and very low ceiling.
As Kenny Rogers says" you got to know when to hold them, know when to fold them", so I think I will fold and dig out the cross country skis, and get in shape for my medical and then try again next May. I did manage to fab and install a cowl for the rad and also a wheel skirt that holds the three extra pounds I added to the tail. It is all still not proven, but so far the airplane is what I expected. Re: Vortex Generators (VGs) on the GU Canard
From memory my project original buyer from QAC first invoiced also in 1984. No FWF, no spars, but does have orange foam cut rather ruff. No glass, no metal items.
I purchased it knowing these facts. More than all of this.. I have every purchase invoice and letter, original plans set, the correct kit number. All newsletters,
option sketches of mods.
The canopy is on the shell with forward hinge (that is going
to change). All bulkheads are complete and do appear to be correct to Engineering. All 4 shells are present
without extreme rash and the join plywood tools are made and identified. Total was $700 with some bargaining in the front parking lot at Luxor in Las Vegas where
I
met the seller half way back when I lived in Taos County.
Ironically QAC delivered the entire kit, engine also, to Henderson Nevada (10 miles from where I bought it)..then it went to California Central Valley, Taos and
now Oklahoma.
It is interesting to learn we may have "cousins" in serial
numbers of the kits, Jay. When I get back home I will verify the QAC serial and year of sale. I do remember the cost was
well north of what I paid!

Notably, there was no mention of using carbon fiber spars in the construction of the prototype Q2 LS1 canard in that initial announcement (QAC Quickie Newsletter #18).
QAC approved and began shipping Q2/Q200 kits with the LS1 canard in January of 1983. The LS1 canard accompanied the announcement of the Q200 and included an upgrade in gross weight and powerplant options. I think they had shipped more than 400 Q2-GU kits by the time they started shipping LS1 canards, but this is just a guess.
I bought my Q200 kit in mid 1984 and it was serial number 2868, meaning it was the 868th Q2/200 kit they had sold.
Many builders did not buy all the sub kits, but I bet it is safe to assume that at least 300 Q2 kits with GU canard were sold. How many were built and flown is anyone’s guess.

Correct if I am wrong on this but wasn't the move from GU to the LS early in the Q history? I remember reading in the Q newsletters about this change. If it is the case then only a few Q2 would requirement for VGs' . In any case..thank you for the photos and info! I will be fabricating a similar locator and include it in my tooling. Since my shells are not yet joined I have the support tools for those and a box of hotwire cut templates.
