Re: New Instrument Panel (non-Q)
That is really cool about the MPG feature! That alone is really useful for verification of aerodynamic improvements (to prove..did the mod do the trick or not).
I do like the appearance too. Guess I'll have to go donate some more plasma since I have ultra rare COVID proof blood now (well..maybe
who really knows?). Recovery from the bug in June of this year AND the Johnson Jab two weeks ago.

Hi Phil!
I'm pretty happy with the GRT products. I know they ain't Garmin and there are some complaints about them (support response & EFIS menu 'friendliness') but all of my friends that have their products are satisfied. That was a big factor for me. Someday it would be fun to have $75k for a panel upgrade (and $50k for paint and $15k for interior and....) but not there yet. ;-) Jon Finley Somewhere in the Southwest flying an RV-4

Re: New Instrument Panel (non-Q)
Ya.. they don't like you flying around Los Alamos either. Strangest place I have ever been to. Like the Stepford Wives on steroids. The highest concentration of
Piled Highers and Deepers in the USA! (PhD).
Being a curious type, I went there for a job opening they had advertised..did all the tests..had a meeting with the 4 top geeks there and they told me I scored
the highest score on the machinist aptitude testing they had. That seems pretty funny to me because I consider myself to be the village idiot.
I didn't get the job, and the reason was because they had a framed poster
of Dr Oppenheimer and proclaiming he was a hero and all that stuff.
I asked them "I wonder if the folks in Hiroshima and Nagasaki would agree with that
poster you fellas have there".
It's was ok tho.. I didn't really want to drive up the hill and down in Winter anyway. Narrow road with no shoulders. Kinda steep too! I didn't see any Earthships
in Los Alamos whereas ol Vern built his in Carson. Stepford
Wives hitched up to Einstieners. Now THAT is a Frankenbird!
I love Oklahoma. Good folks.. and they drink sweet tea without thinking it is odd 🙂
Southern part of NM is a lot different. I had a hell of a time keeping the Los and Las correct too Jon. I like your panel. Pretty kewl!!

Hi Vern. There is an audio output option with the GRT SportEX but I don't have it. I really can't tolerate something spoiling the great 70's/80's tunes that are blasting from my headset! :-) The GRT EIS 4000 does not have an audio output (AFAIK). However; both have a 'warning light' output. In both cases, one sets all of your operating params and alarm points. When one is exceeded, the light flashes and the item that is out of bounds is displayed. You can acknowledge the alert and the light stops flashing but stays illuminated as long as the condition continues. My first iteration of this warning light was too much - scared me to death and nearly blinded me every time it was illuminated. My current iteration has been greatly toned down. Obviously it needs to attract your attention but causing a heart attack seemed excessive. Of course, one could always wire this output to a tone generator and do some interesting things.
I understand about the steam gauges - same for me. I started flying with an EIS about ten years ago with my RV-3. It took a while but I eventually came to love the fact that it does all the scanning for you. Depending how vigilant the pilot is, that can greatly reduces workload. I quickly came to understand that it can do the job far better than I can so I'm happy to let it. That said, you can always watch those values if you like or if you are suspicious of something. The following is one of the engine information pages on the SportEX - in flight. Lots of data there including percent power (51%), MPG, density altitude, and those neat EGT/CHT graphs. All of this data is also logged so you can take it to your PC and spend lots of time studying it. Oh yes, have definitely been over Carson a few times! :-) Bruce! Your right!! Just last night at about 2am I had to zip out to the hangar to fire up the panel. So much fun to see it twinkling in the moon light!! :-) Jon Finley Somewhere in the Southwest flying an RV-4

Great panel Jon, enjoy. I get that feeling Bruce, just about got mine all singing now,
well except for three EGT's.

I've mentioned before that a key factor in purchasing my kit was that it met the FAA's Golden Standard...the weight of the paperwork equaled that of the plane! Recently, I began scanning in some of the original QAC promotional materials that Jim Porter saved and finally created an album to store them; I will add more as the project progresses. The photos are large; I opted for 300 DPI "archival" quality given how increasingly rare these things will likely become... Hope you enjoy this blast from the past and share your stories below!

Great work! Las Cruces? Are you near Alamo? My homestead is in Boles. I'm wanting to finish out my Q200 to make it from NE Oklahoma to Alamogordo with a 30 minute reserve. Time will tell and I may have to fill up once on the way there.

Re: New Instrument Panel (non-Q)
I have a question on the new install, Jon. Does your EFIS provide an audio warning in the headsets in case any of the parameters you establish
become out of bounds? So I admit I am old skool and slow to take on technology..but one feature on my Dodge truck is in fact it does "chime"
when anything is exceeded. Alternator output for instance was too high (the regulator triodes fried)... bing bing bing. So I ran the scan quickly
and the culprit was pretty obvious and the warning light flagged the reason as well. So ..yes.. it is much improved...I suspect lighter as well?
Reading steam gauges is how I learned to fly. I also learned to ride a bike that had ZERO carbon fiber on it anywhere. By the way..you probably
flew over or near my old stomping grounds of the West Mesa in Taos County. Tres Orejas mountian was in my back yard.
Name of the village is Carson. No stoplights..no stop signs. No gas station. Post office and a small grocery.. and a volunteer fire department station.

For the last several years I've been promising something better at FOD to each person that has glanced at my instrument panel and had the 'oh… yuck…' look. This has been going on for so many years that I was running the risk of becoming 'that guy' and getting the funky chicken award. I also wanted ADS-B out so I could once again use all that airspace above 10,000'. So, something had to be done.
I REALLY dislike taking my airplane out of service. A week of that is tough on me, two weeks is nearly unbearable. Obviously, I need more airplanes. Last Saturday (10/23) I went for a nice breakfast flight to Los Cruces, toured the southern border, and then made a run north up the continental divide (similar to this flight from last winter but with less white: More Snow on the Mountains of New Mexico!). We were then scheduled to have a wind event for most of the week. I decided the time had come and the work started immediately upon landing.
My old panel looked like this during that flight. I know… old, patch work, yucky...
The next Saturday (10/30) I was off on a breakfast flight with this new panel:

I've had an engine monitor for years and already knew that it is an amazing tool. I've also been flying with moving map apps (and cellular weather) for a long while. Nonetheless, I've wanted an EFIS for a long time but now that I've got 4-5 hours with it - I am AMAZED and wish I had done it long ago!! The amount of information available and visualizations (e.g. EGT/CHT temps graph over time) are crazy neat. Of course, everyone's mission and needs are different but be please be aware that there are some relatively affordably priced products available with tremendous capability. The WOW list is very long and I don't want to sound like a marketing brochure so suffice to say that I am seriously impressed!! Given the places I fly, I'm kinda ho-hum about ADS-B traffic but certainly interested in the weather and elimination of the 10,000' limitation. Eventually, I'll add the servos and hookup the autopilot but need some time to de-stress from being out of service for so long!!! I'm the current holder of the FOD 'Most Deviation from Plans' award (and wire brush) - I'm not sure if this panel redo will ensure that I retain that award or swing me a bit closer to compliance….
