I talked to Mitch today via phone and I know his airplane somewhat as it belonged to Dave Davis. We believe it to be a 2600 Type 4 conversion and that would mean it would not have the original crank

Your higher temps wouldn't happen to correspond to your reflex
experiments would they. It seems that they elevator position would affect the
lower fuselage airflow more than the cowl

Jon, CG has a large effect on where your controls end up. In my plane
at cruise speed with the elevators neutral in all cases the ailerons are as
follows. At the most forward cg that I see

I took a little trip this morning to down near El Paso, TX and back. I
