Re: Phoenix Deer Valley
Barry Stearns <blstearns@...>
Bruce,
I flew out of Deer Valley when I was in college back it 1996. It was, then, a very safe place as far as Avionics go. At that time, I didn't hear of any theft problems. A friend was recently down in Feb. and had no problems. He stopped at Westwind Aviation (I took training there and rented their aircraft quite often) and though I don't recall the price amount, he said it was pretty fair. Just watch those parallel runways. Some of those pilots on the field like to climb over into the other runways flight path on climb out. Hope this helps a little. Matt's a DF guy on the other list. His email is N329DF@.... His DF is still hangared at Deer Valley. But he works over at Glendale Airport now. Email him direct for hangar space. Deer Valley is pretty secure airport, so your equip is ok overnight, a pretty good midsize airport. Don Stewart Bruce J Crain wrote:

Re: Phoenix Deer Valley
Thanks Barry for the info. Thanks Dave for the invite to Ryan field. I
probably won't be at Copperstate (unless I can sneak out). Our foster daughter and her husband live near Deer Valley so for convenience will stay there. They are pregnant so we want to go look at her pouchie tummie. Thanks Don I will E-mail Matt and see what he has on insider information. Bruce Crain P.S. Dave, if you're coming to Ottawa could you bring arrival procedures for Copperstate? My computer doesn't do attachments. Are you going to Copperstate? Oil Cooler Adapter Drawing
The Ives Hive <iveshive@...>
Attached is a drawing for an oil cooler adapter to use between an 0-200 and an El Reno oil filter assembly. This drawing along with either an El Reno or Continental gasket (for sizing) should suffice for fabrication.
I remember the subject of cooling was discussed in depth (I think late fall or winter of last year). Issues including coolers ,shrouds, cowl flaps, air flow, and air inlet sizing were addressed. A look into the archives might prove beneficial to find overheating cures. Tom Ives

Phoenix Deer Valley (Dates)
docrw <docrwq2@...>
Hi Guys,
Would Don Stewart, and Tom Moore get together and post the necessary information for the Deer Valley Fly-in? That's a Fly-In that us in the West could make... I'm going to try! David Hiatt --------------------------------------------------------------------- Hey Guys, "Honey Lamb" and I are flying to Phoenix in Oct. We will land at Deer Valley. There are a couple of choices for parking and fuel as far as my Flight Guide shows. Does anyone know which is the best deal and are the Q and avionics going to be safe? Matt Guensch (sp.) didn't I see your Q in the parking area at Deer Valley? Is there availability in a hanger for a few days? An early factory newsletter recommended Rain-X on the canard as a rain fix. I am going to test with wet wing on take off. This will be an unstick test same as required for airplane certification; e.g. ground roll with full back stick and note speed at canard liftoff. Test with: dry as is water as is Rain-X dry Rain-X wet If it works as expected one should see a big difference from dry as is and water as is; no difference between dry as is and Rain-X dry; and perhaps a small difference between dry as is and Rain-X wet. I would definitely do the unstick test on your leading edge tape before flight. James Postma james@... (253) 584-1182 9:00 to 8:00 PDT (GMT-8) voice

Re: Ottawa Rides.......Spars again......
Alan Thayer <alanq1@...>
Hi, Barry and All!
Have been lurking here lately, and saw the interest in the carbon spar that has been expressed. As you know, the work that we have been doing out here in California has centered mostly around developping a very easy to build and extremely rugged spar out of carbon fiber rods for the Quickie single-place. However, the design is certainly applicable to the Q-200 as well, and all that is needed is one more exercise of number-crunching to get the proper rod-pack schedule, which the designer does indeed plan on doing eventually. It turns out that i will be in France for several weeks shortly, and i do plan on stopping in at Cap Aviation in Dijon, where Chris works, to check out all the interesting stuf going on there, and to bring back finalized plots and instructions for the Q-1 in time for Ottawa. Hopefully, i can get him to do the number-crunching for the Q-200 as well. The carbon necessary for this project is going to cost a fraction of the cost of the original tubes. In case you missed it, the drop load tests on my prototype canard went without a hitch, and the canard survived just fine, although, i think the whole process must have aged me by at at least 10 years! Brake Lines
Patrick Panzera <panzera@...>
My Q (incomplete project) was built back in the stone age, and has been
exposed to too many UV rays. Subsequently, one of my brake lines (in the cockpit) is quite brittle. So brittle in fact that it takes little effort to snap it anywhere I please. I was wondering if anyone has worked out an easy means to route new lines from the cockpit to the wheel pant? For those of you who are building, I would strongly advise running an oversized line which to use as a conduit, so you can change your lines at will. Thanks! Pat I've pretty much completed the interior, shot a coat of blue/grey Zolatone inside.... looks real clean, especially with the factory (blue) upholstery kit. Now to make the panel.

Pat,

I installed hydraulic brakes on my Q1 after it was finished. I removed the elevators and carefully slit the slot core with a knife. Using a dremel, I cut a small channel in the foam. I placed my brake line into the channel and glassed the slot core closed. I had to drill a channel into the fuselage and into the wheelpant while all was open. I agree, install a brake line conduit if your at that stage. Airplanes are Better
John Loram <johnl@...>
My grown up daughter sent me this one.
Has it been on the list already?............ Why Airplanes are Better than Women 1. An airplane will kill you quickly . . a woman takes her time. 2. Airplanes can be turned on with a flick of a switch. 3. An airplane does not get mad if you 'touch and go.' 4. An airplane does not object to a preflight inspection. 5. Airplanes come with manuals. 6. Airplanes have strict weight limits. 7. You can fly an airplane any time of the month. 8. Airplanes don't come with in-laws. 9. Airplanes don't whine unless something is really wrong. 10. Airplanes don't care about how many other airplanes you have flown. 11. When flying, you and your airplane both arrive at the same time. 12. Airplanes don't mind if you look at other airplanes, or if you buy airplane magazines. 13. It's OK to use tie-downs on your airplane. John Loram
