Re: W and B

Hi Chris,

Something is still not right. If you add the pilot and 1/2 main tank, both are aft of the FS 42.78 mark. There is no way that the CG will move slightly forward to 42.7. Please post the numbers you measured and we can all noodle it. This needs more eyes I think, unless I am really missing something.

Cheers,
Jay

Finished the W&B today. I need an extra 15lbs on the tail due to the front end weight. With the 15 lbs the empty weight is 754.

With 160 lb pilot and full header it is at 971 lbs and 42.78

With 160 lb pilot and full header and 1/2 main it is at 1007.8 and 42.7

With 160 lb pilot and full header and main it is at 1055 and 42.86

With 160 lb pilot full header and main and 180 lb passenger it is at
1218.4 and 45.41

Going to compare to the flying airplanes that are in the files section.

By the way, don't refer to your wife and daughter as BALLAST.

Guess I am eating out tonight. Take care---------------- Chris

I took a 275 lb passenger for a ride and found mild PIO conditions until I remembered to go down on the ailerons with the Reflexer.  Prior to this I'd never used down ailerons.  That made the plane return to normal.  I'm pretty sure I found the max rear CG limit.

Re: W and B

Bruce----------  Sounds more like a W&B issue than just weight placement.

With my airplane sitting level, there is only 5 lbs on the tail wheel.  Most of the well flying airplanes have around 18

lbs on the tail.  Whether I add a thirty pound battery in the back, or add 13 lbs in the tail, it still gets 18 lbs on the tail wheel and with the latter I save extra weight.

Test time will tell. Thanks for the input--------------  Chris

Jim Patillo

Chris my Q200 Taildragger weighs 740 lbs empty and 1340 gross. The cg. is from 41.7 to 47.5, if I remember correctly. Fully loaded, the airplane is at the aft cg. of 47.5.

Pilot only, 5 gal. header only, no bags, forward cg
Pilot only, with 20 gal. fuel, mid cg.
Pilot and passenger only with 20 gal fuel, mid cg.

Pilot and passenger with full main, full header, 6 gal aux tank and small amount of baggage behind pilot, aft cg.

Hope that helps narrow your issue down.

Still doing my W&B.  I have most of my hair pulled outand was reading
the Q manual.

On page 4-3 it shows the sample loading problem. It has the total
weight being 822 and the moment being 36607.7. If you divide the moment
by the weight you get 44.5.  On page 4-4 you can see that puts the CG
back, outside  of the envelope.

Is is wrong or is it a trick problem?  Take care------------- Chris

Don't use the Q2 POH. The Q200 expanded the cg range from 42-44 in the Q2 to 42-47.

Hi Chris,

No experience with the Seahawker (other than drooling over the design some years ago).

As far as your Q goes, I am sure you were quite careful in setting up your incidence, but I can check for you just to make sure. The plans were not very good in how to maintain that aspect of the build. You have wingtips that are modified, since you have added the horner style, so I will need to do the analysis at the wing root on both wings. Get back a few feet from the end of the wing and take a photo parallel to the wing, the top side. Center the camera view on the wing root and have your site line a foot or so above the wing. Make sure the light is such that I can see the wing-fuselage junction clearly. Then do the same with the canard. Send me the photos offline (jay-at-scheevel-dot-com) and I will have a look at them and get back to you. I did this recently on a project that Sam and Jerry were helping out on. I think that yours will be easier to do.

Cheers,
Jay

Jay---------- Thanks for the transponder antenna note. I'll move it tomorrow.

My airplane is built as close to the plans as possible with the addition of the +1 degree on the canard.

What kind of pictures do you need, and would you like to do the same thing on a Seahawker.?

According to some of the old newsletters it doesn't follow the proper formula for decalage.

Getting the weight back to the tail and will do another W+B soon.
Waiting for my friend to weld up my modified tail wheel.

I tack things in place and he welds them up. I know my week points. Take care----------- Chris

Re: Chris Walterson's Q-Tour is uploaded to YouTube

Jay Scheevel

One other thing, Chris. There was some discussion on how plane responds (reflexor, landing etc). When Paul is talking that I was nodding my head, since I have measured his decalage, and what he does for landing and cruise is predictable based on his decalage. Other planes and pilots with different decalage set-ups will tell you different things. This can be confusing if you do not know the decalage of those planes that people are giving you their impressions of.

If you want, Chris, I can do a fairly accurate measurement of your decalage from photos. Let me if you want me to do that prior to your first flight. Be happy to give you whatever insight I can.

Cheers,

Thanks Sam and Chris for this enjoyable tour. Sorry I missed the live version.

Only one comment for Chris right now. I would suggest moving the transponder to the other side of the fuselage. The location of the battery will blank out about 150 degrees of receive and transmit. No way to transmit or receive through copper and lead plates.

Reg Clarke was doing 220+ mph true in his last race to OSH, but he was at 18,000’  They canceled the race before it finished due to weather, so it was never official.

Cheers,

Jay

From Geraldton, Ontario, Canada join Chris (AKA Dorothea Keats) as he gives a tour of his turbo powered 2.5L Subaru, direct drive, Q-2 project, which is nearing completion.   This installation is using a three blade Warp drive ground adjustable prop. It's a tail dragger with inboard gear made from Ford main leaf springs.

Having an aircraft that has not yet flown is a first for our Q-Tours.  We hope that it may be useful for people who are still making their own progress. This Q-Tour will be moderated by Paul Fisher and as always, the recording will be uploaded a couple of days later.  And as always, after our first Zoom time runs out we will log off, then right back on to complete the session.
