Attach a para-wing to your Q-200 and you can probably get good short field performance. Just thinking out loud.

I know you said you were looking for a partially completed kit, but have you looked on Barnstormers? There is an air frame listed in Denver. Not sure where your at in CO, but thats probably about as close as you can expect to find one. It looks like a decent air frame, is has hours on it, but if you were to referb it, you could spend some quality time with it, and make it your own. I like it, but its too darn far away for me. Price is right too. Best, Ben --------------------------------------------

Re: Short Field Takeoff
Hi Jim,
The take-off speed is pretty much a given, as there is little one can do to on our standard hinged control surfaces that would increase the effective wing area. That said, the Q-2 does really nerver uses all of it's wing area effectively because it is impossible to get a all of the wing area into a full stall attitude like you can do with a conventional aircraft layout. Let me explain where I am going with this. At normal takeoff in the dragger-Q, once reaching an appropriate takeoff speed, a mild elevator deflection will cause the Q to lift off from a 3 point (or close to that) and climb out with pretty much the same deck angle as it was on the runway. During the takoff roll, weight on the wheels is gradually reduced as speed increases, drag from the gear on the runway decrease, but induced drag increases during the roll because of a constant 7 degrees or so of AOA on both wings during the whole process. What if you were to deflect the reflexor downward (trailing edge down) for the take off? This configuration will introduce camber to the interior half of the MW (like flaps). The resulting increase in MW lift and forward pitching moment will cause the tail to come up early in the takeoff roll. (like a conventional taildragger, where you intentionally lift the tail then later rotate for takeoff). With the tail up there is much less induced drag from both wings, especially during the later stages of the takeoff roll. The result of less induced drag over the duration of the takeoff roll would be more rapid acceleration, meaning shorter distance to reach takeoff speed. Once takeoff speed is reached, an aggressive application of elevator lifts the main gear off and starts the climb in ground effect. The takeoff and initial climb will give you at weird feeling, because it will happen at a low deck angle, despite lots of back pressure on the stick and a slower than normal climb airspeed. After rising out of ground effect, a gradually easing the reflexor back to neutral will bring the nose up and ease the back-pressure and pitch and airspeed will return to the more familiar range. Of course, none of this has been tested on a real Quickie, but a lot of it could be verified at a safe alttitude through experimentation with the reflexor settings...hint, hint... Cheers, Jay

I get a MUCH shorter takeoff roll with an outside air temperature of ~10 degrees Fahrenheit an a 15 knot wind right down the runway. But it is fairly uncomfortable getting in and out of the airplane!! ;-) Yeah, I know that's not what you are asking for, but I am always surprised by the performance in the winter!! But to your question, no I've never found any magic to shorten the takeoff roll. I always keep the elevators neutral to minimize drag until I reach flying speed, but other than that I just put in full power and it is what it is. Sorry Jim, I'm no help.
