I hope all of the rest of you are as excited as I am!  The Field of Dreams Tandem Wing flyin is next weekend in Davenport Iowa (KDVN).  Could I see a show of hands of who is planning to attend?  I need to make sure we've got enough food and drinks.  I realize weather (or motorcycles?!?) may still play a factor in whether or not you can actually make it, so at this point I'm just looking for intent.  Send me a note privately or here on the list so I can count heads.

Here's my plan (such as it is):
  •  Friday morning - get the hangar opened up for arrivals
  •  Friday noon - fly out to Muscatine (KMUT ~30 miles) for lunch
  •  Friday night - Dinner at Lynn's BBQ - same place as last year
  •  Saturday morning - more arrivals, flying, and bad jokes (right Kevin?)
  •  Saturday afternoon - cookout at the hangar - similar to last year (nobody went hungry!)
  •  Saturday evening - Ice Cream social at the hangar (since everyone is still full from the cookout!)
  • Sunday - departures and a safe flight home for everyone

So fly in or drive in, just get here.  This may be the only place you will see this many tandem wing aircraft (maybe 15?) in the same spot!

Paul,

Wish I could make it, I am deep into repairs, hopefully next year.

Forced landing flew it down to a hay field with 10" of frozen snow crust. The high speed taxi did not go well. No one hurt, no property damage, landing gear and horizontal stabilizer right side damaged. A most likely a design problem of my own creation as there is no plan for a Corvair powered Dragonfly. Still learning.

Have fun and stay safe.

Hi Paul,

I thought that I might be able to swing it this year, but unfortunately I am not going to be able to make it. I will really miss being there. Thanks for putting everything together! Hopefully, I can make it next year with my newly minted Tri-Q. Best wishes to everyone!

Cheers,

I have a friend named Rocky Smith who is very handy. Last year he painted the little bird on my tail after spraying the final paint on the tail section. He is doing all of my final paint spraying later this month on my fuselage (because they call me Mr. "run", but Rocky is really good at it, so I lean on him). He also is very handy with upholstery. Here is a photo of the nice leather work he did on the seat backs that I built.

Final Report.  No damage at the airport.  Even went flying this morning!   75% of the county has no power and Honeywell where I work is not open for business yet (too bad).   No cable internet.  T-Mobile worked, Sprint came back yesterday.  Still lots to do but we escaped this time!  One local beach now has water cutting through it.  Another island shrunk in size by half.  The water in now an ugly brown.  Only a tenth of the air traffic today and only saw 4 boats out.  Typically there are hundreds out.

Thanks for all the prayers and good wishes.

Re: Jon Finley

Matthew Curcio

I've talked to Lonnie a few times about some of those really wild looking props like the one you attached. I can't go into his shop without spending a couple hours picking his brain on these. What he's told me is that the prop like you pictured are a very big compromise for noise with power loss. In theory less noise should make more power but as I understand it these are for the DOD and defense contractors and all they really care about is the noise for drones. Some of them are really freaking cool though.

Lonnie Prince has made some props similar to the elipse design, apparently for smaller engines (maybe drones?). The link below is to a prop on his picture gallery.

Gary,
You are most welcome to bring that dragonfly to our tandem wing flyin in Davenport (KDVN) the weekend of the 23rd.  We don't get a chance to see dragonflies too often!

Thanks for the reply.
Well...at least I got the tandem wing part right.  Sounded real good from 3500' below.  What was your cruise speed?  Looked like you were movin right along.
Very pretty site.  Thanks for the show.

Ah, yes Dave Gall and I have done quite a butt if chatting. He seems like a very passionate and knowledgeable guy. I've really enjoyed talking with him.

Figured I would start a new topic to avoid cluttering up the forum.

There is a "reprint" of an EAA Experimenter article written by Paul himself available at http://rexresearch.com/lippsprop/lipps.htm. That article actually has my all-time favorite propeller quote in it: "Who uses static thrust? Airplanes are meant to fly, not pull tree stumps!"

Ryan:

As a fellow engineer, I can offer my zero cents worth on some aspects of Paul's work, since I've never carved a propeller hung on an airplane. I think the two most important things Paul did were 1) Using actual propeller theory to design a propeller for HIS particular airplane and 2) Using post-1920s and laminar flow airfoils with proper Reynolds Number and Mach corrections. Any "errors" he made from classic propeller theory were actually his own personal design choices, which I won't fault him for (spanning the elliptic lift distribution across the hub, ignoring fuselage effects). However, every homebuilder should take to heart his lesson on propeller "pitch" that's in that article!

[Side note: I got dragged into propeller design by a chance meeting at Airventure 2012 with Dave Gall (yes, THAT one) while he was busy creating a propeller of his own. The high speed, high RPM, and low HP of the Q2 mean you can throw away a significant amount of engine power in a hurry with the wrong prop!]
