  •  Saturday afternoon - cookout at the hangar - similar to last year (nobody went hungry!)
  •  Saturday evening - Ice Cream social at the hangar (since everyone is still full from the cookout!)
  • Sunday - departures and a safe flight home for everyone

So fly in or drive in, just get here.  This may be the only place you will see this many tandem wing aircraft (maybe 15?) in the same spot!

Paul,

Wish I could make it, I am deep into repairs, hopefully next year.


Forced landing flew it down to a hay field with 10" of frozen snow crust. The high speed taxi did not go well. No one hurt, no property damage, landing gear and horizontal stabilizer right side damaged. A most likely a design problem of my own creation as there is no plan for a Corvair powered Dragonfly. Still learning.

I have a friend named Rocky Smith who is very handy. Last year he painted the little bird on my tail after spraying the final paint on the tail section. He is doing all of my final paint spraying later this month on my fuselage (because they call me Mr. "run", but Rocky is really good at it, so I lean on him). He also is very handy with upholstery. Here is a photo of the nice leather work he did on the seat backs that I built.

I've talked to Lonnie a few times about some of those really wild looking props like the one you attached. I can't go into his shop without spending a couple hours picking his brain on these. What he's told me is that the prop like you pictured are a very big compromise for noise with power loss. In theory less noise should make more power but as I understand it these are for the DOD and defense contractors and all they really care about is the noise for drones. Some of them are really freaking cool though.

As a fellow engineer, I can offer my zero cents worth on some aspects of Paul's work, since I've never carved a propeller hung on an airplane. I think the two most important things Paul did were 1) Using actual propeller theory to design a propeller for HIS particular airplane and 2) Using post-1920s and laminar flow airfoils with proper Reynolds Number and Mach corrections. Any "errors" he made from classic propeller theory were actually his own personal design choices, which I won't fault him for (spanning the elliptic lift distribution across the hub, ignoring fuselage effects). However, every homebuilder should take to heart his lesson on propeller "pitch" that's in that article!

[Side note: I got dragged into propeller design by a chance meeting at Airventure 2012 with Dave Gall (yes, THAT one) while he was busy creating a propeller of his own. The high speed, high RPM, and low HP of the Q2 mean you can throw away a significant amount of engine power in a hurry with the wrong prop!]
