That's what I did. I was gung ho about flying it but I don't have time to

Of course they don't want to give them, you have to let loose of your money first.

There is a very nice Q2 with a Jabiru 2200 engine for sale in Montreal,
Quebec. I have flown in this aircraft many times including a trip to
Oshkosh a few years ago. I have also helped with maintaining the aircraft
so am familiar with its construction and current state. It is flying and is
in beautiful shape! You can see the ad on our EAA Chapter web site:

Hi Jay,

As an engineer you know the timeline never moves to the right.

I had to confess at Livermore I did not have the results I was planning on from my plenum cooling system. At 6 hrs of flight time it was apparent I was not getting my overheating under control. I also came to realize my intake was not working either.

I really would like to get the building of this airplane done but it is not done yet. I decided to try a more proven path. I ordered a baffle kit for a Sonex/Corvair from Dan W. ; I ordered a SS intake and exhaust system from WW of Fly Corvair. I got the baffle kit the day before I went to Alaska in Sept. When I got home I tore off the plenums and fit the baffle box to my cowl in about 2 weeks. It was a lot cooler outside but with the belly pan on it still heated up. I flew it twice without the belly pan and climbed out to about 8000 msl and flew about 30 - 40 minutes each time. I was able to determine that one side is running close to peak lean and the other side is like the choke is on. EGT consistent spread with 300 F delta. No sense doing any more test flying until that is fixed.

I got the intake from WW and modified it to a horizontal carb mount. Pulled the engine halfway off to change it out, discovered it hits my engine mount. That was last week, I am currently modifying my intake in a jig to maintain the interface positions. I have cut out the Y and have the T tacked in and should finish welding tomorrow. Some paint and a few days of reassembly and I will be able to test run the engine depending on weather.

No cross country flights yet, I did leave the pattern 3 times but stayed real close.

Slow progress,

Charlie

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for the complete summary. I suspected that you had not stalled on the re-work of the cooling and I was right, it sounds like a real adventure. What a lot of effort though. I think you were probably right to absorb the Wynn cooling system as much as possible in order to shorten your ordeal and get on to the fun stuff. I do hope that you saved that beautiful baffle system that you built, at least to use it as some "wall art" in your hangar. I look forward to hearing about the next phase of testing. I think if we work the timing right, once you get comfortable with the idea of flying over this way, we can entice Paul Spackman into coming down at the same time and we can have our own mini-fly-in to compete with the Paul Fischers and Sanjay Dhalls of the tandem wing world. I continue cranking away on my project, and progress is noticeable. That is all I can ask at this point.

Cheers,
Jay

Jay,

I finished the fitting and welding on the intake manifold today. Degreased it and rattle canned some paint on it. Tomorrow I can start putting the plane back together. I have a couple of broken wires to repair and make up a new oil line configuration for the front bearing to give more room for the wiring harness. It would be great to have a mini fly-in to check out your project.

I hope this manifold solves my mixture imbalance and I can get on with the flight testing.

C'ya,

Charlie
