Q-200 Touch-down speed.

Thanks for that Jim. I reckon I’m not far off that maybe 81-82 ish. I might try to shave a few knots off tomorrow when I have another go……..

Cheers

Wow...I was thinking that mine was already kinda "hot" with approach speed of 75ish...MPH (with bellyflap). Didnt realize that  I should have been expressing gratitude. So has anyone some insights grass field operations? One of the places where I am considering keeping my bird in the future is a well-manicured turf strip in South Florida (Richard's Field).

Patrick - I have never landed on grass, nor will I ever.  I know a couple of guys have, but it just seems like a bad idea, for me at least.  For one, I think it would cause too much drag on the wheels, thus extending the takeoff.

I am sure there are exceptions, but I just wouldn't chance it.

Do you have a taildragger or Tri-Q?  Tri-Q might fare better.

Sam

I fly a TriQ-200 and have landed at the grass strip at Leeward Air Ranch in Ocala, FL several times.  Granted, it is a wide, 6000'+ runway that is well groomed.  Had no problems either landing or taking off.  Because it is at sea level, I actually broke ground in less time than I do at my home drome at 2200'msl.  Just make sure the grass is cut.

I had a nose gear collapse on a Tri-Q while taxiing on a turf runway at a fly-in.  Hit a small gopher hole.

Patrick,

What type Q are you flying? How many hours have you flown that airplane?  How many landings?

Best Regards,

Jim Patillo

Jim Patillo

Good evening Chris and Patrick,

I don't like making flat approaches in my Q. I prefer a steeper, faster approach and use ground effect to round out and soften the landing, tail wheel first. Sometimes I use the speed brake, sometimes I don't depending on the runway length. My personal minimum is 2,600' x 50'.

A flat approach at higher rates of speed can be like skipping a rock across water. Flat or steep approaches at 75 mph as Patrick indicated in his Q is asking for it........ When the bottom drops out, it drops out fast and this becomes a real problem "Quickie"quickly.

Further, a tail dragger Q handles cross wind exceptionally well and can land when other tail dragger's don't have a chance. Quartering tailwinds, not so good.

Regards,

Jim Patillo

Mine is a TriQ200. Being deployed in Afghanistan, my hours on her are few so far, but I expect to get more while on leave next month....gotta perform an epic cross-country (AZ to FL). Ground-adjustable prop, which has been more hassle than expected.  No heater, so that should keep things brisk - which is still preferable to a summertime flight across the desert.
Thanks for all the feedback...this group has been extremely helpful for me!

Patrick,

What kind of ground adjustable prop?
