hoxdesigns is me, John Hoxie 20004 5th Ave NE Shoreline, WA 98155 206-854-3884 I liked planes and wanted to fly since I could look up and find the plane when I heard one fly over. I hung around my local airport in 4th grade. Took ground school in high school. Started private pilot training when I was a private in the US Army in Korea, spring of '77. Got my license forty years ago, December 16,1978. Flew ultralights in '80-'82, '89 and '90. Started my Q2 for cheap cross-country flying spring of '82. Kit #2590. I tried to join QBA online today. Looks like I have to do it through the mail. I saw the map Jay Scheevel put the link up. I see there is at least that benefit for joining QBA. I was an old member from '82. Will attempt to contact the Q-List people that replied to me. |

I found this letter in my Q2 file box today. I found my Q2 Trailer Owners list; Chuck Grazier 1/4 interest (trailer builder) Terry Flanagan 1/8 interest Tim Murphy 1/8 interest Bob Lane 1/8 interest Bill Bensinger 1/8 interest Yours Truly 1/8 interest Rod Graham 1/8 interest Letter from Rod Graham, May 11, 1996 giving the results of the trailer survey. The top two have since passed on. Chuck died in his Tri-Q accident and Terry from pneumonia. Rod Graham had recently sold his Q2 and confirmed it with a phone call to him today. Just called and left voicemail with Bill Bensinger, as he picked up the trailer the date of the letter. Bob Lane had moved with a forwarding address before the letter. No phone number No contact info. for Tim Murphy. Originally, when Chuck built it, I think it was just the top two and myself. Does anyone know if any of these are active in Q-List? |

I have been working on a Q2 for 3 1/2 years as I bought it with air frame mostly completed. Now have engine installed and am wiring the avionics. Fairing fuselage needs to be completed as well as making the cowling.

hoxdesigns@..., Would you mind sharing your identity? Who are you? Where do you live more specifically? It sounds like you are not far from me and EAA chapter 84. I live in SE Everett area and have long admired the Q200 airplane. While getting started on my experimental I was talked into building something more conventional and ended up building an RV-6 which has been flying almost 20 years now. I am still very interested in a Q200 and have tried buying one to no avail. I don't think I could get one built now and have time to enjoy it much at my age. I would extremely appreciate the chance to fly one enough to know the airplane to the fullest. It always troubles me that there are no Qs in the Puget Sound area to see at flyins, etc. Dan Lee just started flying his up at Skagit this year and his is a tricycle gear. Some problems with trying to do transition trading at a fly-in is different goals. Fly-ins pilots give rides to encourage builders and may let the rider fly when high enough to not cause problems, unknown rider qualities. When I go to fly-ins it is usually a jam packed adventure of planning, packing, assessing weather, multiple leg flights, little sleep, socializing hangar talks, return planning, flying home with no problems. Not to mention the Dragonfly does not qualify for the dual flight Phase 1 testing. Each aircraft is different and will have its own personality. I spent several days traveling to gratefully spend an hour in the pattern with a CFI in his Dragonfly. He actually let me do touch and goes and had to control the power. I am not that guy. Thoughts on thinking about transitioning from conventional aircraft to tandem wing aircraft. The following is my opinion and flawed understanding of some aspects of flying tandem wing aircraft not to be construed as intelligent instruction. I think that most of the transition is to really understand the difference of flying with the horizontal stabilizer in front and how to deal with it. Case in point: 27,000 hr retired airline pilot starts ferrying airplanes for hire. Gets hired to move a Dragonfly, no time in type. Manages to land at Ogden pitch bobbing down final. Confesses to my brother the next day, said he never wrecked a plane yet but needed help because he might wreck this one before getting it delivered. I talked to him. He could not understand why he could not lift the tail by pushing forward on the stick during the take off roll. After a couple of hours of discussion about changing aircraft angle of attack by changing camber and lift on one end of a teeter totter and the resulting change that rotates about the rear wing 1/4 chord behind the center of gravity. In conventional aircraft the center of gravity and the center of lift of the one wing are very close together and near the 1/4 chord and change aircraft angle rotates around this point of by wagging your horizontal stabilizer around with the stick. Pushing forward instantly lowers the angle of attack and you are flying again. This does not happen with a canard platform. The canard design depends on the rear wing never being able to reach an angle of attack that would result in a stall. The center of gravity is far ahead of this (main) wing compared to conventional planforms in the tandem wing configurations. The horizontal stabilizer also has to carry more load than the wing and must stall before the main wing to be spin proof, a desired feature. This brings a hidden hazard to the novice tandem wing pilot. When approaching a stall in a tandem wing the front of the airplane is high, airspeed is slow, and the sink rate is high, slow down more and it will pitch buck with the canard stalling and un-stalling, but will not spin. With a VW going to full power will not stop the sink rate if you are below 80 mph. You have to push the stick forward increasing the sink rate momentarily to get your airspeed ahead of the power curve. So if you approach slow on final nose high low power, pull back to stop the sink but you are already on the back side of the power curve but clearly faster than pitch buck, adding full power without lowering the nose will not help you stop the sink. Bounced landing, broken prop, broken canard, runway excursions all the fun killing things you do not want. Second thing taking off with too much back stick and associated elevator drag and not enough power to climb away in a 3 point attitude. You have to push stick forward close to the ground to gain enough airspeed to climb out, again behind power curve. Hope there is not a 50 ft obstacle to climb over. Hey! You all have fun out there and be safe! One Sky Dog On Dec 5, 2018, at 8:53 AM, Vern Lehman smeshno1@... [Q-LIST] <Q-LIST@...> wrote:

Jon Finley is the NM guy you are talking about that built the Q2 with the Subaru. He now flies an RV4 and keeps it at Truth or Consequences, NM most of the time. He sometimes monitors this group, so he can respond if he has anything to add.

There was a NM builder/owner a few years back but he sold the completed aircraft and if memory serves it was totaled by the new owner. Nice aircraft.. there is a long story behind on line about it's development. Subaru EA81T powered.
Last time I was at the Arlington E.A.A., just before accepting a nice financial handshake from the Lazy B in Everett (2013), there were ZERO tandem wings represented! Not even the Slicky was on the field. Arlington is the #3 largest E.A.A. fly-in within America so it was a bit sad. I hope this group can turn that tide because this particular aircraft design has always been an interesting planform, not to mention the performance! You'll not lack for visits by other curious pilots on the ramp when you taxi in.
I told my wife after she earns her LSA in the Capella XS we own that I'll sit right seat (I am Private SEL rated) in the Q bird and she can learn the differences in how each perform. We have plans to fly International, and she being Russian born and fluent speaking (she is now a Naturalized US Citizen also) it would make an adventure to visit the family there a lot easier.
We have been to other parts of Europe but not flying a private aircraft. My heritage is German and as youngster in Kansas my Grandfather on my fathers side would speak with me only in German (if Grandma was not around).
My wife and I were in Munich last Christmas.. took my wife to visit Neuschwanstein and Oberammergau, also drove the Autobahn to Frankfurt where a classmate of my wife now lives. Alla (my wifes friend) does not speak English but her German is proficient so we had quite a visit with only my wife and I speaking in English.
I believe there are at least two Q-2 in construction in Europe. One is in Western Russia so we plan on visiting that builder if possible. From what I understand they both plan on using the Rotax 912 powerplants.

yes.. that is the one. Beautiful aircraft too. You got me thinking (uh oh!) maybe at F.O.D. attendees with flying aircraft
make concerted efforts to transition pilots. That would include me also Charlie. Been too many years since I flew the
Onan powered Q1 and the day was absolutely calm. I was told what to expect but it still took going to the smooth
grass to make the landing and I kept my distance from the runway lights. Single pull mechanical brake. I trained in an
Aeronca 7Ac.
This is one reason I have already decided to fly off the required 40 hours at Cushing Oklahoma. I also plan to take
training for ELSA mechanics certification at Rainbow in Corning Ca depending on what happens with the job here in
Tulsa. The offers look pretty good at Spirit in 2019 for what the 737max and 787 build rates are going to.
Dan.. when you move from the Evergreen State you'll be close enough we can assist if you like. We have reason to fly to
New Mexico anyway from time to time. From: Q-LIST@... on behalf of Charlie oneskydog@... [Q-LIST]

Sold to a doctor? Flew it home tried to land at the local air park 3 times before mushing into the brush. I believe a crosswind was involved. Plane totaled, Pilot ok.
Lesson to be learned!!! Q-birds and Dragonflies do NOT take off and land like conventional platform GA airplanes. Without transition training it will probably not turn out as pleasant as the expected vision the new to type

Thanks for the info Vern. There was a builder on Whidbey my first few years building and helped him with one of his wing layups. I believe he was Navy and moved away before he finished, I live in Shoreline and used to fly a 'Dac out of Arlington in '89 and '90, once flying to Whidbey landing at Oak Harbor airport. Without radio I had to thread my path to avoid ARSA, Alert Area and airport traffic area, both horizontally and vertically to offer a decent height glide point over water. Flight was uneventful except for entering the pattern and finding myself in a flock of turkey vultures, which, according to the newspaper a week later, were new to the state. Alamogordo has a pretty good airport. I was hoping there was a tandem there. May buy a place within a mile of there. You know what town One Sky Dog lives in. An eight hour drive for me to Phoenix (Wife's family is there) (If I move to Alamogordo area). Got a couple rides in a co-worker's Long EZ several years ago. Flying it felt like the 'Dac, just a lot faster. I, also, was a teenager 4.5 decades ago.

What town? I used to live on Whidbey (Clinton), and as a teenager 4.5 decades ago we lived in Arlington. I also owned a home not far from Taos NM, which we sold recently. My Q-bird project was in both NM and Washington.
Charlie (One Sky Dog) lived in or near Provo Utah but he has since relocated to Arizona. He might be closest to your location in La Luz. I now live in Mannford Oklahoma which is West of Tulsa. At Cushing Oklahoma airport is one of the folks you should get
to know. Recently there was a gathering at Enid Oklahoma for the Tandem Wing design aircraft and I would expect that the Field of Dreams will be continuing. Charlie owns and flys a Dragonfly. The group here is narrow but supportive, so no matter if it is a
Q-bird or Dragonfly your in good company.
You'll find that not a lot of EAA chapters have depth in the Tandem Wing. That is to be expected since these aircraft were always very unique in aviation. I recently purchased a Capella XS2 for my wife to earn her LSA rating in. No support that I can find..in
fact...very little of anything out on the I-net on this design.. I'd really like to find a copy of the builders manual for this LSA because it would assist in Conditional Inspections and repairs. I doubt I will find one tho. At least the Q and Dragonfly have
this data available to anyone right here on this blog. It's nice to learn an original kit owner has decided to move to completion. Your aircraft is indeed a rare one, being an original owner! Maybe you can pick up a single axle boat trailer in Washington
and modify it like I have done to trailer your aircraft?
Hope your move to the Land of Enchantment works out. I became tired of Pineapple Expresses!!
