N96BJ Flight

Bruce Crain

After flying 14 hours in our RV 6 to Angel Fire, NM, Pampa, TX, Phoenix, AZ to see grandkids, ski and spend a week in a Time Share I pulled out the TriQ 200. I flew to Stillwater to see my brother Kirby and get the engine warmed up and water cooked off. Great landings both airports and when I returned to Enid the wind had shifted to 240. The best runway was 170 so 70 degree crosswind with wind at 18 knots gusting to 27 knots! I lowered the right wing andr pushed left rudder and put the right main down 1st with the other 2 following quickly. Seemed good and the tower came on and said “you handled that crosswind nicely”! I told him the TriQ handled crosswinds much better than my taildraggin’ RV because of the smaller rudder. It doesn’t weathervane into the wind so much! The temperature was around 65 F which is a 70 degree difference from the week before and “Snowklahoma”! We weren’t able to get home during that snowstorm from Angel Fire and Pampa so we cancelled our commercial flight to Phoenix and flew the RV 6! The trip home over the hump east of Phoenix had a wonderful tailwind and we saw ground speeds of 235 mph! Take that United. Home in a little over 4 hours with a picnic lunch in Tucumcari, NM! (We packed sandwiches because Tucumcari doesn’t have a courtesy car).

Thus far I have only logged 2.5 hrs in the TriQ this year. That just ain’t right! Gotta do better! Come on “Spring Fling”! Kevin please don’t mention the worthless cross wind landing I had last year. Just our little secret. 😘

Frankenbird Vern

How bad was the homestead when you arrived? Just today the water mains in Tulsa were finally repaired.. Out here in the sticks we are on a water catchment system I built backed up by a well I drilled last Summer. No water problems but my electric bill is probably going to be a bit extreme. Need to get PV back on a roof. I lived off grid for over 20 years in Taos County...so I know the limitations and potentials. I've been to Angel Fire many times...Taos, Crested Butte,.. lots of skiing. Its a beautiful airport at Angel Fire.

Which is your preference for X-wind landings, Bruce. Forward slip all through Final or do you crab angle and then align to the
runway? X-wind Pilot techniques were taught both ways in my Student times... Instructor presented both.

I ask because the various types of aircraft make the Approach to landing different. I am wondering specifically the change (if any) in Tri Q compared to taildragger version.

I learned both and most of the time use forward slip. I do this because early in the approach it's mostly known what the ability of the aircraft is to fly the X-wind component at that airport at the time.  The risk of course is strict airspeed maintenance because I'm cross controlled at low altitude.

Glad your back and safe.  Does your RV have the added gussets on the gear tubes? This months Kitplanes has a very good article on the topic.

Hi Vern!
Glad  you made it through Snowklahoma!  It was warmer in Angel Fire than Enid when we were there.  Took off in a big crosswind from Angel Fire and an glad to be able to  use the RV again!  One of those never again things ya know!  I've been into Taos on one or two occasions and love having a cross runway there.  Angel Fire needs one badly!  Big safety factor!  The have lost lots of aircraft especially under powered or pilots forgot to lean out!

I don't really think of forward slips much except to slow the TriQ down a bit.  I try to come in over the numbers flat like I am sitting on the runway so the nose doesn't get to high.  If you come in with the nose high you are going to fast.  If the nose if above the horizon much it will pay of and give you some bounces.  Of course the Dragonfly may work differently so go cautiously!  I usually try to hold the upwind wing down and opposite rudder as sometimes in a gust crabbing can make  you go airborne again.  Your mileage may vary though so if you are used to crabbing it might work well for you.  When you get the "Frankenbird" flying you will need to test it at small increments at 1st.    How's that for no commitment!  wink

Yep the  main gears have the stiffeners.

Frankenbird Vern

It was a bit uncomfortable for a while. Not much done outside I'll say.

I learned to ski back in the late 60's on "Cascade Concrete". We lived in Arlington Washington and the high school there didn't have a football team, but did have a ski and track team. Coach took us to Mt Pilchuck (closed down years ago now)... and told me I couldn't turn worth beans..too slow on my edges..so I ended up racing downhill. My knees paid the price..not too bad but still I feel them from time to time.

The whole Northern New Mexico scene has changed drastically. When I first moved there in 1997 it was a LOT backward. Anyway..in 2017 Lara and I sold off our 50 acres with the Earthship I built and decided Green Country Oklahoma was a lot better for her gardening efforts (and our retirement pension dollars as well!). It was a good choice for us.. we are both much happier here.

I have been drawn to Cushing for the 40 hour testing..but we are closer to Bristow. As you know most of the time we have North/South winds but less so here in the Tulsa area. I figure Cushing is a much better testing base..but I do want to have the aircraft closer. Pogue in Sand Springs is a nice airport in itself, but lots of hills and trees so not many places to choose from in emergency landing.

Frankenbird's canard and wingspan is 18 feet..same as Q2. I figure since it has the GU airfoil, it will probably fly similar to any other MKII Q2 with the same airfoil. The difference being construction of the Canard and Wing are Dragonfly.. the wing has the D-fly turtledeck...so both surface bolt to the Q2 bulkheads. Because I will be using a three blade prop with the same deck angle on the ramp as any other Q2 I'm not concerned that there will be a prop tip clearance problem. The aircraft will look pretty much as any other Q2 would externally, but imagine it with your RV6 gear.

Some of the specific changes I am doing deal more with what I learned in the aircraft factory life I fortunatly endured..and some from owner reports..accident reports..additions that any could choose to do if they had the same concerns as I.  Got lots to learn tho..and that is why it is a worthwhile effort. I approached every aircraft program I was assigned to as the Village Idiot, and then let the folks around me decide if I had anything to contribute. Most of the time I stayed the Idiot..but got paid pretty decent wages for doing so :-)

Any time frame for completion of "Frankenbird"?  Inquiring minds want to know.  It would sure be great to see you taxi up at FOD this year!  I don't suppose the weather has been conducive to squeeging fiberglass resin.  But Spring is coming and the temps will be perfect!  I concur that Cushing would be a great place to test fly it.  I've been into Pogue and didn't like to surroundings and approach.  It is a bit unsettling to me.
What are you working on currently?

It's not much fun being the second time I've built my (our) domicile, but getting to the interior decorating part is
at least making it look like some progress being made. Most of the systems work is done now.  Lara has to go back to
her birth nation to assist her Mom and get her dental and medical work up to date, and go thru the bureaucratic maze
to obtain her new overseas Passport before it expires.

She will be leaving end of October and I have orders to complete the home before her return to the States by March 2022..
or else!!  I agree with her point.  After then I can do all the other in sequence.

My mom used to tell me "don't be lazy!"  Since about 13 years old I have been staying active to say the least. Definitely
no time for video games. At the same time I can't get too crazy spending on these projects.. now I am drawing only
Pensions.

$1400 in the coming Biden Bux goes to Aeroflot Airlines!  I can't get a Visa now anyway. Maybe by Autumn that will change
but I have my doubts. We went to church in Jones yesterday and our Priest there also was wondering how the logistics of
International travel will work over the next year or so. Right now it's not in the cards for me to travel overseas as much as I
would like to.

Bruce

No place on earth like NM...up North the vibe is different, but there are a ton of things to see and do
all over the State. Strangest place I visited there was "on the hill".. Los Alamos. It's like a scene from
Stepford Wives.  I guess it's appropriate since the highest concentration of PhD's in the USA live there.

I tell folks if they want to know what it was like up in my neck of the woods (er..that would be sagebrush,
Pinion, and Juniper) just watch "Off The Map" starring a fella named Sam Elliot.  The opening and closing
shots were filmed in the village where I built my Earthship in.. Carson. I was there during the filming.

Dennis Hopper lived not too far away..Chief Dan George also. One or two other gollywood folks.

Carson used to be in Ripleys as having the smallest Post Office in the United States. My place was on
the hill to the North so I could see if the Post Office was open or not. No rental aircraft at Taos..closest
I could find a CFI or a rental for BFR was in Santa Fe.

Bottom line was.. it is arid..lots of caliche soil. My wife who is a major gardener couldn't transition and
I couldn't keep up with the water demands. Better to relocate and cash out..and I always liked Eastern
Oklahoma. My wife is much happier where it rains much more consistently. We do miss the views and
sunrises/sunsets.

Your near the airport there, John?
