What epoxy, what foam

Mike Bergen

So I'll step in.

Several points that heed to be made. WEST System is NOT a structural resin per se. Charlie is correct in stating that it is only good to about 135F before it starts loosing strength. Jay has kindly provided my presentation that we have given several times at Sun N Fun and AirVenture. All the data is there for consideration. WEST epoxy is okay for micro application but do not use the WEST 410 microspheres as they are a plastic sphere and expand under darker colors that may be used in stripping..

I have used PTM&W, Aeropoxy, ProSet (the same guys that make WEST) and MGS. Any one of these three choices are good.

The recent issue with the fuel tank failure , in another discussion, is due in part to the fact that epoxies are not suitable for auto fuel exposure. Even cured epoxies don't tolerate the ethanol exposure. If the fuel tank is built with epoxy then coat the inside as Jay has recommended. I've built the 'wet' surfaces on my fuel tanks from a chemical resistant vinyl ester resin just as an extra precaution.

About Clark Foam. This is the white sheet foam that was used for a long time to build various parts of our planes. IT IS NOT a closed cell foam so it wicks fuel or what ever liquid it is exposed to. There are more suitable foams available from multiple sources in the family of PVC foams. I may be reached with source recommendations.

Also, I noticed an email that came in my old mail box that I do not use anymore. Use either:
dmbergen@...
or
dmbergen@...

Cheers, Mike

Chris,

Good choices.

West was designed to encapsulate wood boats to protect them from rot. Structurally it has a low heat distortion point of approximately 135F. This cannot be improved with a post cure. The West Pro series is structural but I have no experience with it.

Aeropoxy was formulated by PTM&W for a structural matrix for fiberglass. It has a heat distortion temperature of 157F as cured and as high as 190F with post cure or just aging on the ramp. It’s properties are as good as any room temp structural epoxy. 3 hardener speeds.

I  like to use Aeropoxi.   It was recommened after Safety Poxi wasn't
so safe.  I have the epoxi pump so it is real easy.

I use the West epoxi system for doing the filling.  It is probably
good for structure also, but when I do structure I stay with the same epoxi.

As for foams, there are several types depending on the part. Blue or
pink dock billets are used for the flying surfaces.

A type of surefoam is used on the fuselage. On my little Quickie the
fuselage was made from really soft carvable foam, green in colour.

I suggest you get in direct contact with Mike Bergen about this. This is more complicated than can be addressed over social media. Mike is a composites expert and is giving seminars on current best practices. He's at Oshkosh this week, so you may have to wait a week or so.

For what its worth.....
I once bought some foam from Composites Canada that is cut into small sguares that allow it to be shaped into compound curves
The squares are held in line with fibers

Probably can be bought elsewhere

Im sorry if im asking a repetitive question but i cant seem to find the answers im looking for, or answers that are up to date.

As im starting to gather needed items for repair of this quickie im hitting the common questions.

What epoxy? What foams?
