Hi All,
I am based in the UK and have been asked by my inspector to consider a canopy latch that can be opened from outside the aircraft. I wondered if anyone has considered or achieved this already on a Q?
My canopy hinges forward, but any ideas accepted.

Hi Tim I used an automotive bearclaw latch that I mounted in the rear top centre of the canopy I then ran a cable on the inside of the canopy ( inside some nylaflow) to a flush mount release on the left outside of the canopy on the lower rear corner. That latch has a lock incorporated into it.
I made a handle for the automotive latch that allows me to pull the canopy down and lock it or just push the handle upwards to release it.
I installed a recieving pin in the bulkhead for the automotive latch to grab and made it so that I can actually pull the pin out in an emergency

I dont intend to pull that pin on an emergency landing, just pop the canopy release. If I ended up upside down though, I dont want to be fiddling with a canopy latch with a canopy opening against the ground

That is essentially what I am saying, Chris. I don’t have emergency pins in my hinges, but in a sudden deceleration, my canopy (doors, actually) will fly forward to open and stay there (if they are unlatched). In flight, they crack open slightly when unlatched, but air loads in flight keep them from sliding forward.

That sounds interesting Mike - some photos here or directly mailed would be great. It sounds like the sort of thing used on some sailplanes.
@Jay - I agree, my checks for most aircraft say to unlatch prior to crash/landing… There are probably a small number of occasions this might not work out, but my suggestion was for the rescue to smash the canopy, but apparently that doesn’t always happen and people waste time looking for a handle.
BTW your doors are pretty cool :-)

Here's some photos of what I have done so far . I am putting off the final welding and installation until I have the wing installed and will have a better idea of final clearances. I know for sure you can get these parts from SPAENAUR. Pretty sure the pictures should be self explanatory,

Meant to send this one at the front I'll put a ring on this so I can pull it out in an emergency. The other end of the pin has a spring loaded ball to keep it from slipping out

Robert--- On both my Dragonfly and the Q 200 I have mostly the suggested locks for the front opening canopy with the file cabinet lock for locking when I am not around. Glasair has a nice system that allows you to open from the outside, but I wanted to keep it simple so in Canada the rules are, if someone is in the airplane the rescuer need to know how to get in.
I had some reverse printed letters, so I could install from the inside and have on the both sides of the canopy .
EMERGENCY EXIT BREAK CANOPY. It seamed to comply with the rules and I was good to go.-------- Chris

This is the canopy latch on my Long-Ez. Parts came from a Glasair. First picture is from inside the ccockpit. The other two are from the outside.
