FWIW, Garmin makes it clear in both the G5 marketing and the manuals that a remote magnetometer is required for DG/HSI functionality: -- -MD #2827 (still thinking about planning on visualizing how to finish building)

Good morning Guys,
I called a friend at Uavionix yesterday and explained what was going on. He took charge of my problem right away, so hopefully I will have some news on this shortly. Andrew is the Director of Operations for Uavionix North America and a real nice guy. I will get to the bottom of this

I'm really interested Jim. I installed my AV-30 yesterday. It's been too windy to fly it, but everything seems to be working on the ground. I'm really looking forward to seeing it in action!

Hi Jim, I ran an early Dynon D10 EFIS for many years. It had an internal magnetometer and of course, Gyros. No GPS attached to it. The heading never precessed a bit. I wonder if the uAvionix is even using the internal magnetometer to update the heading at all. ( Almost done with a Dynon Skyview install into a Velocity now).

Jim, Isn't the precession problem inherent in any gyro-based compass/DG? ... though I suspect some gyros have less precession than others. Isn't installing an external magnetometer the right solution? Geoff N82GK
Good morning all,
I recently installed two Uavonix AV30’s in my plane and removed all the vacuum stuff. That all worked great and I really like not having vacuum. Each unit is a full blown AHARS. Having said that, the DG unit cannot hold a heading worth a crap and precesses within 10-15 minutes to where it has to be reset with the compass. I’ve tried calibrating it but no joy for better performance. I can buy an external magnometer to solve this but would rather not. My question is, has anyone else seen this problem and how did you solve it.
BTW, I hope to pass 2000 hours on my plane this year. It’s been a blast. Keep building only if it’s a little every day. There is actually an end believe it or not, and you will be greatly rewarded!

I suspect it is a design and/or magnetometer-quality issue. They have decided to fit everything in a tight space, and with everything else that is going on in there electrically, it must be an impossible balancing act. I have a Dynon Skyview with a separate ADHRS unit (which contains the magnetometer). This is located remote from the EFIS, but not very far away and is still behind the panel and I have not had any trouble with stable magnetic compass using this installation. Even so, Dynon offers a separate magnetometer for problematic installations. Dynon’s setup also allows for installing a second ADHRS unit for redundancy in a stack, although I have not done this. I think that uAvionix wanted to make a splash by doing everything in a very small self-contained unit and they have found out by now that stray EM energy is impossible to block within a small distance of a pile of electronics, screens and power supplies. They should have anticipated this in the design phase. Sounds like a marketing-department imposed constraint. You may be able to mitigate the “precession” by identifying any component that changes its EM emission profile over time. The only one of these I can think of is the flat screen, as it may build up static electricity on it’s surface over time. Maybe finding a way to discharge this, like a small bare ground wire wrapped around the perimeter of the screen? Just thinking out loud here. Cheers, Jay

ATC gives you vectors in magnetic heading not GPS heading. So it renders the AV-30 DG undependable therefore useless. They advertise it as a DG and that's what I bought it for. I also had an issue with mine with a line showing up on the screen and I had to send it back to have the screen replaced. The honeymoon is over with uAvionix for me.

Living in Honduras (where GA is practically non-existent) I don’t have much opportunity to stay current. I have not dealt with Uavonix but have installed and debugged other manufacturer’s gear. Their internal and external magnetometer offerings are not necessarily of the same quality. The cheapest tech may work well enough for installations where the panel is sparse and no wiring or ferrous metals are within a foot or so of the unit. My experience is that the external magnetometer is required almost every time. Placing the external one is an exercise in black magic. My installs were Velocities and each project was unique. Magn. placement in one plane often did not work in the next. Garmin specs called for a level of isolation such that there was no possible location meeting all the specs. I had to find the best compromise. How these companies market their goods is based, wouldn’t you think, on what delivers the most profit. Certainly selling gear that would appear to have a working magn. onboard when it is nearly always useless, well, I would not predict that feature would be helpful for profit in the long run. Reputation catches up. Having two units side in the panel means the two internals will have different levels of magnetic interference. I would be surprised if both would calibrate successfully, and even then they could easily be off on some headings. Why not program them to use GPS heading when available? I am getting foggy on that detail. One reason would be that GPS takes far longer to react to the heading change. That could be a hazard in IMC. I would think that keeping track of the GPS heading in some sort of accumulated error statistic could help verify the integrity of the internal magn. and advise “Warning: magn. data is full of crap!” Comment: I would not rely much on technical support given by a company for a product they have not manufactured… Question: How is MGL doing these days? Ten years ago they had gear that looked great. Pilots who flew with them hated them as having lagging AHARS. I did several panel upgrades for MGL units to be scrapped as unacceptable. Hopefully they have either overcome or faded into the sunset. Hey Rick and Kevin, you know they should be giving us the damn things (remote mag) for free. Have you tried working on Uavonix for something to be done about this. I’m about to. I have two AV30’s and they don’t agree after 15 minutes (when both are set to show DG’s) and forget maintaining the heading. I’ve talked to Uavonix before about calibration and did exactly as they instructed with the figure 8’s etc. but no bueno. The displays and other features are great but the DG feature isn’t reliable as is. I don’t get how they can sell them as a DG with smiles on their faces. As a side, I love the rest of the jam-packed features these little units provide. They have bright and clear screens that work well in direct sun light. Great for clear or tinted canopies.

I too have one AV30 installed. Talked with the rep at OSH. She said if it precesses more than a few degrees in 15 minutes, a remote is needed.
The reason cited was magnetic interference in the panel. I bought it for the DG! Had a bad DG vacuum driven, and my compass goes crazy
when I excite the alternator. The crazy part is that I will see 10 to 20 degree swing during flight. When I get on the ground and am taxiing to the hanger,
it will be very close to the setting I used before TO. (the times I have checked)
In my case I believe that in flight I am using the GPS and looking at track. Not magnetic. We automatically correct for wind correction and variation.
Even though variation is 1° or so in this area, so I would consider it non existent. With light and variable winds aloft it seems to do better.
Just my theory. I don’t have a bunch of hours on the unit. So you will need to make your own conclusions.

Hi Ben and Keith,
Uavonix does sell a remote magnometer compatible with these units. They’ve added it as an option for $295.00 but you would think that after spending that much for AV30’s their internal magnetometers would work better. You can set them
both in DG mode and go fly for 15 minutes and they vary from each other after each and are off course. I’ve tried calibrating them and talking to the factory but that hasn’t helped so far. Everything else works great.

“Q: Will this unit work on the AV30 for a DG?
No, this is only used for compatible MGL instruments. The AV-30 is a non-slaved DG, so it does not require a remote magnetometer.”
Hmmmm……
Jim, forget it without the magnetometer. I own 2 also and have the same complaint, personally I think uAvionix should provide the magnetometer for free for the poor saps like us that bought them. It's
false advertising in my opinion. If you research the web and review the AV-30 Facebook group there are many many complaints.

Do you think it would help to put ferrite beads on coax and wiring coming out of different instruments? Maybe bring all of your wiring back to a big grounding block? Seemed to help mine long ago. Pushing the mic button would affect my auto pilot. It’s been a long time since I did both of those things and today it is still solid even when hitting the mic button. RF? RMI?

Interesting. I just ordered one (Black Friday sale). I really wanted the artificial horizon function, but I was hoping the DG would work as well. I guess I'll find out! Although it may have to wait until it warms up a little - working in a cold hangar is no fun!!
Congratulations on 2000 hours Jim!

Hi Ben and Keith,
Uavonix does sell a remote magnometer compatible with these units. They’ve added it as an option for $295.00 but you would think that after spending that much for AV30’s their internal magnetometers would work better. You can set them both in
DG mode and go fly for 15 minutes and they vary from each other after each and are off course. I’ve tried calibrating them and talking to the factory but that hasn’t helped so far. Everything else works great.

Here’s what ACS says:
“Q: Will this unit work on the AV30 for a DG?
No, this is only used for compatible MGL instruments. The AV-30 is a non-slaved DG, so it does not require a remote magnetometer.”
Hmmmm……
Jim, forget it without the magnetometer. I own 2 also and have the same complaint, personally I think uAvionix should provide the magnetometer for free for the poor saps like us that bought
them. It's false advertising in my opinion. If you research the web and review the AV-30 Facebook group there are many many complaints.
Good morning all,
I recently installed two Uavonix AV30’s in my plane and removed all the vacuum stuff. That all worked great and I really like not having vacuum. Each unit is a full blown AHARS. Having said that, the DG unit cannot hold a heading worth a crap and precesses
within 10-15 minutes to where it has to be reset with the compass. I’ve tried calibrating it but no joy for better performance. I can buy an external magnometer to solve this but would rather not. My question is, has anyone else seen this problem and how did
you solve it.
BTW, I hope to pass 2000 hours on my plane this year. It’s been a blast. Keep building only if it’s a little every day. There is actually an end believe it or not, and you will be greatly rewarded!

The problem with internal magnetometers in a panel instrument is proximity to steel or wiring carrying any significant current. External magnetometers can be placed where there are no stray magnetic fields. I have installed bunches. Occasionally an internal magnetometer can be calibrated. If you are very, very lucky.
