Accessible instrument panel

Following are photos that show a 2-winged instrument panel that allows access behind the panel, forward to the firewall while standing outside of the cockpit. The center frame is constructed with aluminum "L" stock. Vertical piano hinges both sides of the center pedestal supporting each wing. Outboard of the wing is a single screw securing it. The glare shield is supported by a forward slot that it slips into.
Gaining access behind the panel is as easy as removing the two wing screws, swinging open the wings and slipping out the glare shield.

This is still the best idea that I wish I would have made. Working behind the panel through the leg holes is a horrible experience!

I'm with Paul on this one Jerry. This is an extremely valuable mod, wish I had done this one.

I chose to make the panel out of fiberglass. By curvin
g a lip over the top and on the bottom, it provides enough rigidity. Then I used wrinkle paint. Fiberglass makes it easy to modify the panel when necessary because of a replacement or upgrade. Just glass in the old hole, cut a new one and wrinkle paint.

I made mine hinge from from the center console with removal of four nuts at the air vents. I can get to everything on the back of the panel.
To do major work like I just did with replacing brake and fuel lines, it comes out in about 20 minutes.
