Canopy Hinge Designs

My Quickie came with these weird corners between the fuselage and canopy ...

... and I am sure thats the design because the canopy was supposed to be side hinged. Well I am not a fan of this, had it with my Sonex before and in wind it was a real PIA.

So I am trying to copy / adapt Jim's scissor lift design ...

But obviously that corner gets in the way of any forward movement. So here are my ideas/options, for your commenting ...

#1 CUT CORNER, REDO FIBERGLASS - Cons: More fiberglass work, limits access by a few inches. Pros: looks better to my eye, allows me to put on simple 2 straight bars for lifting
#2 STICK WITH SIDE HINGE - Cons: flaps around in wind, only entrance from one side. Pros: easiest to implement, big entry space
#3 IMPLEMENT FWD FOLDING HINGE - Cons: I have no space on my header tank to mount anything, hinge gets in the way of electronics per current install, still hangs up in the wind vs flat fwd like Jim's design. Pros: others have done it, just copy and do though the corner might get in the way anyhow
#4 FANCY SCISSORS - Cons: I am on my own with the design. Pros: It might just allow me to keep the corners and have the canopy lift first and then move forward.

Here is #4 design started in OnShape but looks clunky and will look into other geometries ...

So what's the mind meld here thinking? Curious to hear comments other than "Do what everyone else did" :-)

Rob,

My thinking was if the engine was alight, where would the flames go when I opened the canopy.

My TriQ had the scissor lift when it came to me, it now has forward opening.

Reason I thought of this, was a TriQ in the 90s in UK had nose leg collapse and engine fire.

Jay.. maybe your design?  My fuselage has the forward hinge from a previous builder.. not staying with that at all!! I live in the Midwest and the thought of a large clear "sail" just waiting to catch a large summer thermal drifting across a hot August ramp had me reject that design right away.

On a ditch or other such unfortunate (such as not planned type) rollout, eject the canopy off the rails by pull pins and a solid push UP and over the wing. Just like the ditch instructions in a Cessna say to pop open the doors.

I learned too early as a Pilot.. Fires in airplanes are not cool!

Not really my design, Vern. I see some distinct mechanical and critical stress problems, but I don’t have the energy to critique it right now.

Robert,

Sorry for the delay. The hinge parts for the canopy is 4 ea. 12”x1”x1/4” black anodized aluminum pieces of flat plate.  I can eject the canopy with 4 quick disconnects.

Jay.. I ment the design you arrived at for your aircraft..perhaps offer yours? And Jim also caught my eye with the
disconnects before.. which seems a great feature to include to my project. I'll have some shell repairs to do after
removing the forward hinge canopy.  I wonder how many forward or side hinged were broken over the decades
from wind gusts. Its a big problem in "fly over country" of the USA.
